Conor McGregor’s UFC return doesn’t seem too far away, but according to Shavkat Rakhmonov, he shouldn’t be given a title shot right away. After winning both lightweight and featherweight titles, Conor McGregor’s UFC run has been a bit disappointing. However, if the Irishman is able to bounce back with a stunning win over Michael Chandler, he could get a chance to win the championship soon.
This is what is bothering the Kazakh fighter. “Nomad” recently spoke with MMA Fighting, where he talked about Conor McGregor’s chances of getting a welterweight title shot. “To be honest, I don’t even think about when Conor is going to fight or when he is going to be ready… I don’t think about all that. He has been getting ready to fight for a long time but hasn’t been able to do that yet. I don’t even think about him winning this one fight in three years is gonna do something,” said Rakhmonov.
Rakhmonov is currently the top contender for welterweight title
“Nomad” further stated that The Notorious is definitely a big star, but he doesn’t think that the former double champion will get the title shot right away. Rakhmonov then showed his trust in the UFC, calling it the most fair organization. He claimed that they would definitely do the right thing.
Rakhmonov has many reasons to be worried. He is currently the number one contender for Belal Muhammad’s welterweight championship. Despite being ranked at number 3 in the welterweight rankings below Leon Edwards and Kamaru Usman, the Kazakh fighter holds the edge as both Usman and Edwards have lost their title fights. Although Edwards will try to cash in on his rematch clause, that might not happen just right away.

Dana White hinted at McGregor’s return
Moreover Conor McGregor has gained a lot of weight and will face Michael Chandler in a welterweight bout. If the “Mystic Mac” manages to win his comeback fight, there is a high chance of him getting a title shot. However, as Rakhmonov said, the decision to give him a chance or not will be entirely at the discretion of Dana White. But as of now, all the attention is focused on Conor McGregor’s comeback. The UFC CEO hinted at his return in his recent Instagram live. McGregor himself also had previously confirmed that he will fight before 2024 ends.
