Rohit Sharma’s Exceptional Leadership Amidst India’s World Cup Journey
In the wake of India’s heart-wrenching six-wicket defeat to Australia in the World Cup final, coach Rahul Dravid praised captain Rohit Sharma for his exceptional leadership that propelled the team through a remarkable 10-match winning streak in the tournament. Unfortunately, a bad at the finals stopped India from winning third World Cup title.
Rohit Sharma played with aggressive batting style throughout the tournament which was crucial in setting the tone for India’s journey with explosive starts in the powerplay overs.
Dravid commended Rohit’s commitment to a positive and attacking brand of cricket, stating, “He wanted to lead by example. I thought right through the tournament, he was quite superb in doing that.”
Despite selfless efforts from Rohit Sharma, India found themselves struggling at 81-3 after his departure in the final. Rest of the team failed to deliver on the big occasion and India was bowled out for 240 runs on a good batting wicket.

Dravid acknowledged falling 30-40 runs short of a competitive total, attributing the challenge to Australia’s effective bowling during a period where the ball seemed to stop more in the afternoon.
Reflecting on the defeat, Dravid shared insights into the team’s difficulties in getting boundaries during a crucial phase of the game. “We weren’t able to get boundaries. We were rotating the strike, but we weren’t able to hit those boundaries.”
He noted the change in ball behavior between the afternoon and evening, highlighting the impact on India’s ability to score freely. Rohit Sharma wanted to bat first on that wicket which he got by the result of toss where Pat Cummmins chose to bowl first.

Addressing the emotional aftermath in the dressing room, Dravid said, “There were a lot of emotions in that dressing room. It was tough to see as a coach, because I know how hard these guys have worked, what they’ve put in and the sacrifices they’ve made.”
Dravid’s perspective on the loss encapsulates the essence of sportsmanship – recognizing defeat, learning from it, and moving forward. As he aptly put it, “That’s sport. That happens. And the better team won on the day. I’m sure the sun will come up tomorrow morning. We’ll learn from it. We’ll reflect and move on, as will everyone else.”
India will now meet Australia for 5-match T20I series which starts from October 24 at ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium. Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul will not be part of team India for this series.
