PV Sindhu advanced to the women’s singles second round
PV Sindhu, a badminton player from India, will have the chance to win her first BWF World Tour championship of the year at the Denmark Open. The former world champion and two-time Olympic medalist advanced to the Arctic Open semifinals last week.
In Denmark, PV Sindhu’s first-round opponent is Scottish shuttler Kirsty Gilmour. However, in the second round, she might face either Japanese former world champion Nozomi Okuhara or Indonesian seventh-seed Gregoria Mariska Tunjung.
Aakarshi, ranked 38th, fought to shock German world number 26 Li Yvonne 10-21 22-20 21-12 in another match, while two-time Olympic medalist Sindhu labored past world number 28 Kirsty Gilmour of Scotland 21-14 18-21 21-10 in a 56-minute opening round encounter.
The seventh-seeded Indonesian player Gregoria Mariska Tunjung will be a challenge for Sindhu, who last week advanced to the quarterfinals of the Arctic Open. Despite having an overall 8-2 head-to-head record, the Indonesian has beaten Sindhu twice in their past three matches this year.
Aakarshi will also have her work cut out for her since the next opponent she will face is the left-handed Thai Supanida Katethong. In their lone encounter this year at the Singapore Open, the world No. 19 Thai overcame the Indian.
Srikanth, who won the silver medal at the 2021 world championships, had a dismal day as he lost bravely against Weng Hong Yang of China in the men’s singles opening round, 21-19, 10-21, and 16-21.
Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, who just won the gold medal at the Asian Games, withdrew from the competition, advancing their Malaysian rivals Ong Yew Sin and Teo Ee Yi to the second round.
