Commonwealth Games Federation Elections: PT Usha, president of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), will advance in her role as a leader by running for vice president of the Commonwealth Games Federation in the next elections. On Wednesday, the CGF released the list of candidates who have been shortlisted for the next elections. It was to choose candidates for the positions of president, vice president, regional vice president, and members of the sports committee.
The elections will have Hugh Graham of the Cook Islands, Barry Hendricks of South Africa, Sandra Osborne of Barbados, Richard Powers of Canada, Ian Reid of Scotland, and Usha of Uganda competing. Usha is the committee chair for the Indian Talent Olympiad and was unanimously elected as the IOA president last December.
The two contenders for the presidency are Chris Jenkins of Wales and Kereyn Smith of New Zealand. CGF stated in a press statement, “The incoming President will be responsible for leading the Commonwealth Sports Movement over the next four years and helping to shape the Games into the future.”
The individual vying for the position of Regional Vice President is: Colonel Botsang Tshenyego of Botswana represents Africa. Judy Simons of Bermuda represents the Americas. Christopher Chan of Singapore, Maxwell DeSilva of Sri Lanka, and Dr. P T Usha of India represent Asia. Ephraim Penn of the British Virgin Islands represents the Caribbean. Louise Mackie of England, Harry Murphy of Gibraltar, Helen Philips of Wales, and Craig Philips of Australia represent Europe.
Before the General Assembly, the current CGF President, Dame Louise Martin, remarked, “I’m delighted to see so many high-caliber candidates. They want to play such an important role in the Commonwealth Games movement. Their readiness to help reflects the enormous passion and support for the Games. We have witnessed it across the world. Especially in the past few weeks. Regarding what the Commonwealth Games will be able to do in the future, I am thrilled and confident.”
The CGF General Assembly will take place in Singapore on November 14 and 15. The six regional vice presidents and the six members of the sports committee will be chosen on the first day.
The next day would see the election of the president and three vice presidents.
