On Sunday, March 10 at the National Stadium in Karachi, the Pakistan Super League (PSL 2024) Match 28 featured an exciting conclusion as Quetta Gladiators defeated Lahore Qalandars on the final ball. Gladiators were chasing a target of 167 when Shaheen Afridi bowled the final over, 14 off 4, and they were caught off guard when the left-arm seamer removed Laurie Evans (7 off 4) off the first ball.
After Saud Shakeel (88* off 55) hit two consecutive fours off his first two balls, the equation further narrowed down to four needed off the final ball. But on the final ball, he failed to farm the strike, leaving Mohammed Wasim Jr. with the enormous burden of securing the victory with a boundary. The 22-year-old maintained composure to smash a short delivery over a deep backward square leg for a maximum, capping an exciting victory for his team.
PSL 2024:
The legendary Viv Richards, Quetta’s batting consultant, even stormed onto the field to celebrate their victory, sending the entire dressing room into a frenzy. The whole squad was spotted joyfully embracing Wasim as Quetta guaranteed their place in the tournament’s knockout stages.
Earlier in the day, Lahore Qalandars achieved a respectable score of 166/4 in their allocated 20 overs, having chosen to bat first. Lahore’s openers, Mirza Baig (12 off 13) and Sahibzada Farhan (25 off 22), put on a 38-run stand off 33 balls. But the two were fired together for succumbing to Abrar Ahmed.
Shai Hope (5 off 7) also left cheaply after being dismissed, leaving Lahore on 69/3 after 9.4 overs. Asad Shafique (59* off 39) and captain Shaheen Afridi (55 off 34) saw that their team was in trouble and engaged in a huge 91-run standoff 57 balls to help them finish on 166/4 in the 20 overs that were allotted.
Lahore, on the other hand, lost and was eliminated from the current season after finishing in last place with just one win out of ten games and three points. However, Quetta still has one league match left, on March 12, against Multan Sultans. With a victory in the final game, the team led by Rilee Rossouw hopes to move up in the standings.
