Worcestershire in Mourning: Promising Young Spinner Josh Baker Dies Aged 20
The cricketing world is in shock following the tragic news of Josh Baker’s passing. The 20-year-old Worcestershire spin bowler passed away on May 2nd, leaving a deep void in the hearts of his family, friends, and teammates.
Josh Baker, a left-arm spinner, had already carved a niche for himself in the sport. He made his first-class debut for Worcestershire in 2021 and went on to represent the county in 47 matches across formats, claiming 70 wickets. Just this season, he featured in two County Championship matches, his last outing being against Durham in April.
The Worcestershire Cricket Club is understandably devastated. “The news of Josh’s passing has left us all devastated,” said Chief Executive Ashley Giles. Tributes poured in from across the cricketing fraternity, highlighting not just Baker’s talent but also his warm personality.
Former England spinner and Worcestershire coach, Giles, added, “Josh was much more than a teammate; he was an integral part of our cricket family… We will all miss him terribly.”
Born in Redditch, Baker rose through the ranks at Worcestershire’s New Road and even represented England at the under-19 level. He had a promising future ahead of him, having recently recovered from a back injury and signed a three-year contract in 2023. He even played a crucial role in Worcestershire’s promotion from Division Two of the County Championship.
Worcestershire County Cricket Club is heartbroken to announce the untimely passing of Josh Baker, who was aged only 20 years old.
The love and prayers of everyone at the Club go out to Josh’s family and friends at this time.

A statement from the club described Baker as someone whose “vibrant spirit and infectious enthusiasm” endeared him to everyone. His “warmth, kindness, and professionalism” were qualities that made him a beloved member of the team.
The news resonated beyond Worcestershire. Warwickshire County Cricket Club and Pakistani cricketer Usama Mir, who was set to join Worcestershire for the T20 Blast, expressed their condolences, highlighting Baker’s positive personality and cricketing talent.
The Professional Cricketers’ Association (PCA) also offered its support to Baker’s family, friends, and teammates. PCA Chief Executive Paul Lynch stated, “This news is impossible to comprehend.” The PCA and the Professional Cricketers’ Trust are committed to providing support during this difficult time.
Worcestershire Cricket Club has vowed to honor Baker’s memory “in a manner befitting the remarkable person he was.” Specific plans for the tribute will be announced later.
Josh Baker’s life and career were tragically cut short. However, his impact on those around him and his potential in the sport will not be forgotten.
