Salernitana will hope to get their first win of the season when they host Genoa in the Serie A. With just four points from their first nine games of the season, the visitors are now ranked 19th. Genoa is in 15th place with eight points from their first nine games.
Preview (Genoa vs. Salernitana)
In their nine Serie A games this season, Genoa has won two, drawn two, and lost five. With eight points, they are now ranked 15th in the standings going into the upcoming round of games. As a result, Alberto Gilardino’s team will be trying to build on their two wins so far this season. However, Genoa has only managed to gain one point from their previous three games. They lost at AC Milan and Atalanta BC and drew away to Udinese.
When the two teams met last in the 2021–22 Serie A season, Il Grifone was unable to defeat Salernitana. They lost 1-0 away before tying 1–1 at home. Salernitana, on the other hand, avoided relegation by 11 points and ended 15th in Serie A last season. It was undoubtedly a successful campaign. Granata hasn’t had much luck this season, though, with a record of four wins, five losses, and four draws. That has put them in 19th place in the standings. Just three teams in Serie A have yet to win this season. Salernitana is one of those teams.
The numbers don’t exactly make for pleasant reading right now. Filippo Inzaghi’s team has the poorest defensive record in the league with 19 goals given up. The Salerno-based team did, however, manage to salvage a point against Cagliari last time out. The 2-2 draw put an end to a run of three straight losses. They came against Empoli, Inter Milan, and Monza, during which they gave up eight goals.
Team News
Mateo Retegui and Junior Messias will miss Friday’s match for Genoa, but there haven’t been any new health issues for the home team in the lead-up. Despite the disappointment of losing to Atalanta by two goals the previous time out, head coach Gilardino is expected to resist the urge to rearrange his pack. Considering that Retegui has three goals in Serie A this season, his absence is unfortunate, but Albert Gudmundsson, who also scored three goals in Italy’s top division in 2023–24, is eligible to start in the final third. Given that Salernitana has not yet reported any injuries, head coach Inzaghi may be able to field a complete roster for this match.
After scoring twice in the second half of last weekend’s match against Cagliari, Boulaye Dia, 26, is sure to play in the last third of the field once more. While Jovane Cabral is anticipated to hold onto his spot in an advanced area, the seasoned Antonio Candreva has already scored two goals in the league this season and is expected to start in the starting lineup. It is tough to support any side with any degree of certainty because, although Genoa is the favorite, they haven’t exactly been great this year. While a home win would not be shocking, we believe Salernitana will be able to take home some of the glory on Friday night.
