Darren Moore will officially take charge of his first Championship game as Coventry City host Huddersfield Town. The visitors are now ranked 16th in the standings with eight points after their first seven games. Coventry is ranked 18th with seven points after seven games.
Preview (Coventry City vs. Huddersfield Town)
The Sky Blues will remain in the English second division of football for 2023–24 after reaching the Championship playoff final last season but losing to Luton Town on penalties. With only seven points from their first seven games this season, Mark Robins’ team has struggled to get going and is currently ranked 18th in the standings. Coventry has only lost twice, making them comparatively difficult to beat. They have only won once and shared the points in four games so far. The Welsh squad had leads of 1-0, 2-1, and 3-1 going into the final minutes of Tuesday’s game. Matt Godden’s goal made it 3-2.
The Sky Blues won both league meetings against Huddersfield last season, scoring six goals while giving up none, including a 2-0 triumph in the equivalent matchup against the Terriers. They will need to string together some wins in the upcoming weeks in order to rise up the table. Under Moore, who took over as head coach last week after Neil Warnock left, Huddersfield has entered a new chapter. It will be interesting to watch what the highly regarded manager can accomplish with the Terriers this season.
Given that they were third in 2021–22, Huddersfield’s 18th-place performance in the Championship last season was a major letdown, and it is tough to see them challenging for a high position this season. Huddersfield has won two of its last three Championship games. They beat West Bromwich Albion and Rotherham United, before drawing 2-2 with Stoke City. It turned out to be Warnock’s penultimate game in charge.
Team News
For this game, Coventry will be missing the services of four first-team players due to injury. Milan van Ewijk, Ben Sheaf, Fabio Tavares, and Callum O’Hare will all miss out. Godden has had a strong start to the season, tallying five goals in just seven appearances. The 32-year-old will once more play in the last third of the field. Although Haji Wright has only scored once so far this season, he should stay in the attack. Joel Latibeaudiere might move up to the wingback position at the back because of Van Ewjik’s injury. Daniel Ward, Jonathan Hogg, Loick Ayina, and Oliver Turton are the other four Huddersfield players who are not available for selection.
The Terriers have only scored eight goals in the Championship so far this season, with Jack Rudoni leading the scoring charts with two. Delano Burgzorg, who is aiming to start this game right away and who might replace Kian Harratt. He replaced at halftime of the previous match against Stoke, could make a change in the final third. Since Coventry has shared the points in four of their seven Championship games this season, we expect another deadlock in this match.
