Burnley will host Brentford in the Premier League on Saturday. Last Saturday, the Clarets let a two-goal lead slip in a 2-2 draw with West Ham United.
Preview (Burnley vs. Brentford)
When West Ham hosted Burnley at the London Stadium, they were suffering from a hangover from the Europa League. David Datro Fofana’s potential goal of the season broke the scoreless draw. Dinos Mavropanos’ own goal gave the Clarets an unexpected 2-0 lead at the half. But following some sharp remarks from David Moyes at halftime, West Ham unleashed a different force in the second half. They quickly cut the deficit in half through Lucas Paqueta. Danny Ings, a former Burnley player, then finished off the Irons’ comeback with a deft turn and half-volley.
With ten games left, Burnley is still ahead of Sheffield United in 20th place on goal differential. The former Clarets attacker’s second goal was disallowed and hitting the woodwork. Burnley defeated the holders of the Europa Conference League with a point. Because to Nottingham Forest’s loss to Brighton & Hove Albion, the safety distance has shrunk to 10 points; but, Vincent Kompany’s Turf Moor team, who have lost their last 11 games in all competitions, would still need to work a small miracle to pull off the latest amazing escape.
Twenty points lost from winning positions is the second-highest total of its kind in the 2023–24 season. Burnley has only lost a Premier League game after taking a two-goal lead once, in last weekend’s draw against West Ham. Brentford made sure that Arsenal’s number two would not escape with such misfortunes at the Emirates last weekend, as Yeoman Wissa deflected the Englishman’s attempted clearance into the back of the net after Declan Rice’s opening header. This came after Brentford was unable to capitalize on Aaron Ramsdale’s howlers at the Gtech Community Stadium.
Team News
Regarding Burnley’s injury situation, everything remains as it was. Aaron Ramsey (knee), Nathan Redmond (thigh), Kyle Foster (surgery), and Jordan Beyer (thigh) are all still out, though the former may return to duty during the international break. Josh Brownhill was only able to play from the bench at the London Stadium following his return from suspension. Kompany changed to a 4-5-1 formation at halftime, bringing on midfielder Jacob Bruun Larsen. The Burnley manager’s formation tweak did not work out, so Brownhill might have to settle with another cameo. Josh Cullen and Sanders Berge both played well in the midfield against West Ham.
Regarding Brentford, it is hoped that Christian Norgaard, who was unfortunate enough to only play 34 minutes on the Emirates surface last weekend due to what Frank described as a contact injury, will be fit for the weekend. A slight thigh issue kept Sergio Reguilon out of the game against Arsenal, but Ben Mee (ankle), Ricardo Henry (knee), Josh Dasilva (knee), Aaron Hickey (thigh), Bryan Mbeumo (ankle), Kevin Schade (groin), and Ethan Pinnock (ankle) are still out of the running. If Reguilon’s anticipated return causes Keane Lewis-Potter to drop to the bench, Matthias Jensen will be called up to the midfield if Norgaard’s injury turns out to be more serious than initially thought.
