Tenerife vs Real Mallorca: Preview

Tenerife form analysis

Tete come into the new year in inconsistent form after a mixed set of results over the past month. Their most recent match ended in a disappointing 1-0 home loss to Elche courtesy of a Rodrigo Mendoza goal in just the 3rd minute. Prior to that, Tenerife picked up a creditable 1-1 away draw at top half side Leganes thanks to a Teto strike on the hour mark to cancel out Sergio Gonzalez’s late equalizer.

However, their performance two weeks before was very poor as they fell 3-1 away to struggling Racing Ferrol. Talisman Angel Rodriguez netting a consolation goal after they went 3-0 down. Tenerife’s best display arguably came in a professional 1-0 home win over relegation rivals Alcorcon. Sealed by a clinical second half Rodriguez finish. On the whole, Tenerife seem overly reliant on veteran striker Rodriguez for goals while looking vulnerable defensively. Conceding at least once in their last 4 league matches. If the manager cannot address these issues and make Tenerife harder to beat, an unexpected relegation battle could ensue in the second half of the season.

Real Mallorca form analysis

Mallorca come into the new year with just one win from their last five league matches. Their most recent result was a 1-1 home draw with Celta Vigo, responding well to going behind early through an excellent Iago Aspas finish by equalizing before halftime courtesy of a Cody Larin strike. Prior to that though, Mallorca put in a limp display away to Champions League chasing Real Madrid, with Antonio Rudiger scoring the only goal of the game midway through the second half.

That loss came on the back of two solid festive period draws – at home to high flying Osasuna in an entertaining 3-2 game, and 0-0 away at struggling Almeria. Mallorca’s best recent performance came over a month ago, beating Europa League contenders Sevilla 1-0 at home thanks to an early Larin goal. On the whole, the manager has made Mallorca tough to beat but they lack a cutting edge, scoring just four goals in their last five league games. Addressing this and turning more draws into wins could be vital for a tranquil second half of the season.
