Sevilla are looking for their first points of the La Liga season when they host Las Palmas. Las Palmas, with just two points from their first four league games of 2023–24, are in 18th place. Jose Luis Mendilibar’s team is at the bottom of the standings after losing all three of their league games.
Preview (Sevilla vs. Las Palmas)
Due to heavy rain in the Madrid area, Sevilla’s match against Atletico Madrid had to be postponed. As a result, the Europa League holders have not played since losing 2-1 to Girona at home on August 26. This season, Mendilibar’s team has also lost to Valencia and Alaves in La Liga; with 0 points from three games. They are currently last in the competition. However, the international break came at the perfect time.
The Champions League group stage campaign for Los Nervionenses will start against Lens the following week. It will be interesting to see how the team does in the European competition. Las Palmas has had a challenging start to the 2023–24 season with only two points from four games. They are placing them in 18th place in the standings. On August 12, Garcia Pimienta’s team drew 1-1 with Mallorca in the season opener. They then lost 1-0 away to Valencia in the following contest.
Prior to the international break, La Union Deportiva lost 1-0 against Girona after drawing 0-0 with Real Sociedad earlier in the season. With just one goal, they now have the fewest goals scored in the league. After spending five consecutive seasons in the Segunda Division, Las Palmas finished second in that division last year to earn a return to this level. They will now attempt to establish themselves in La Liga. Since defeating Sevilla in La Liga in September 2015, Los Amarillos have dropped all five of their games against Sevilla, who they will face on Sunday night.
Team News
Ramos is rejoining the team he left in 2005. Following the close of the summer transfer window, Sevilla’s roster appears to be much stronger, and Mariano Diaz and Boubakary Soumare are expected to make their debuts on Sunday. Youssef En-Nesyri was reportedly close to leaving Estadio Ramon over the summer, but he stayed put and is once again anticipated to start. However, Sevilla will be without five players due to injury, including Alfonso Pastor, Tanguy Nianzou, Marcos Acuna, and Jesus Navas.
Daley Sinkgraven, Marvin Park, and Fabio Gonzalez won’t be available to Las Palmas. Sandro Ramirez and Alberto Moleiro are both questionable as well since they must undergo late fitness exams to determine whether they will compete this weekend. No significant surprises are anticipated in the Las Palmas starting lineup for this game; Munir El Haddadi and Jonathan Viera are expected to return to the attacking lineup, and Sory Kaba will likely continue to play center forward.
Even at this early stage of the season, this is a crucial game for Sevilla. The home team will be under intense pressure to win this weekend, and while we anticipate them to earn all three points, Las Palmas has the ability to make it uncomfortable.
