Newcastle United will look to continue their good form when they host Crystal Palace in the Premier League. Both teams learned from their most recent games played prior to the international break. The Magpies and Nottingham Forest played to a dramatic 2-2 tie. The Eagles and Nottingham Forest’s goalless draw was a far more low-key affair.
Preview (Newcastle United vs. Crystal Palace)
Between the first two international breaks of the season, almost everything that could go right for Newcastle did go right; in addition to their Premier League comeback, Eddie Howe’s team defeated Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City at St. James’ Park in the EFL Cup and Champions League, respectively. At the London Stadium, however, a European hangover was evident as the Magpies trailed West Ham after only eight minutes thanks to a goal from Tomas Soucek. Only an Alexander Isak brace would come before a thrilling equalizer from Hammers’ new boy Mohammed Kudus in the 89th minute.
Howe would have preferred a stress-free two weeks while Newcastle’s international players were representing their nations. Supporters of St. James’ Park are awaiting word on Tonali’s potential long suspension. Howe needs to put these distractions out of their minds in order to extend their winning streak to eight games. This is a crucial accomplishment ahead of Borussia Dortmund’s visit the following week.
The German powerhouses may be going to a stadium where Newcastle has won five straight games. Howe’s team has won four straight at home since losing to Liverpool’s 10 men. They conceded only one goal in 360 minutes of play. The Dane couldn’t duplicate his exploits against Nottingham Forest. The only noteworthy chance for either team in a dull draw came from Morgan Gibbs-White’s lob onto the post. However, it was enough to keep Palace in the top half of the standings after eight games of the 2023–24 season. The Eagles are keeping Manchester United and Chelsea at bay in ninth place.
Team News
Juventus midfielder Fagioli was already given a seven-month ban for using illicit gambling websites. Tonali withdrew from the Azzurri squad when the accusations surfaced. He will probably receive a longer suspension. He reportedly acknowledged betting on AC Milan matches while he was a member of the team. Conversely, all of Joelinton (thigh), Alexander Isak (knee), Sven Botman (knee), and Joe Willock (calf) may be ready to go again, while Anthony Gordon will return from a one-game domestic ban. Harvey Barnes, on the other hand, will likely need months to recuperate after foot surgery.
As previously stated, Eze and Olise, two of Palace’s most important attacking threats, are still sidelined due to thigh issues and are on the visiting team’s double-digit injury list. The losers from the draw with Forest were Jeffrey Schlupp (knock) and Jairo Riedewald (adductor), while Dean Henderson and Nathan Ferguson were eliminated due to thigh problems, along with Joel Ward (adductor), Matheus Franca (back), Nouirou Ahamada (ankle), and Jefferson Lerma (thigh).
Doucoure trained all week before being ruled unavailable, so his absence from the clash with Forest was unexpected. Newcastle should have little trouble getting back to winning ways in front of their own supporters, even with the unwanted distraction of Tonali’s upcoming suspension, since Palace’s offensive shortcomings are going to cost them dearly once more. With Dortmund coming to town, Howe might be reluctant to risk some of his injury concerns. The hhot hands of the Magpies should help them secure all three points.
