Newcastle will be looking to build on their win in the EFL Cup against Manchester City as they host Burnley in the Premier League. Midweek, both teams secured their spots in the fourth round of the EFL Cup. The Clarets defeated Salford City 4-0 and the Magpies stunned Manchester City 1-0.
Preview (Newcastle United vs. Burnley)
An incredible third-round victory over the tournament’s defending champions, a chance at retaliation may soon be on the table. Due to their teams’ commitments to the Premier League and the Champions League, both Eddie Howe and Pep Guardiola made substitutions on Wednesday night. However, Alexander Isak scored the game-winning goal in front of an especially passionate home crowd.
The fourth-round matchup between Newcastle and Man United will be a rematch of last year’s championship game. After a rocky start to the season, the Magpies are starting to resemble their former selves. They broke numerous records in an 8-0 thrashing of Sheffield United last weekend. Eight different goal-scorers found the back of the net during Newcastle’s biggest-ever away league win. It saw them move up to eighth place in the standings thanks to their four-game winning run.
That impressive run also includes a creditable goalless draw away to AC Milan in the Champions League. A fifth straight clean sheet this weekend would be exactly what Newcastle needed. They host Kylian Mbappe’s Paris Saint-Germain at St James’ Park next week. Burnley’s odds of completing a victory as convincing as Newcastle’s eight-goal thrashing of Sheffield United are remote. Vincent Kompany’s team at least managed to outperform the Magpies in terms of goal production.
An excellent night for Anass Zaroury, who assisted three of the Clarets’ four goals at the Peninsula Stadium. It saw Sander Berge, Jacob Bruun Larsen, Dara O’Shea, and Wilson Odobert put the game to bed. Wilson Odobert then joined the fun in the closing minutes. Burnley will now play Everton in an all-Premier League matchup in the fourth round. Burnley has currently been unable to earn a point at Turf Moor. They are still unbeaten away from home this year. They haven’t suffered a loss there since Man City humiliated them 6-0 in the FA Cup six months ago. Kompany’s team could use some inspiration from Newcastle this weekend.
Team News
Howe has acknowledged that Newcastle winger Harvey Barnes could be sidelined for months. He was cruelly pulled off with a “substantial” foot injury just before the Bramall Lane onslaught started. In the meanwhile, Barnes will have company in the treatment room from fellow long-term absentees Joe Willock (Achilles) and Emil Krafth (knee), while Paul Dummett, who was pulled off late in Wednesday’s victory over Man City but would have been anticipated to leave the team anyhow, will remain in the treatment room.
The Magpies manager should promote youngsters Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento to the bench. Kieran Trippier, Fabian Schar, Bruno Guimaraes, Anthony Gordon, and Miguel Almiron should start. The visitors are also without Hjalmar Ekdal (knee), Darko Churlinov (blood poisoning), Michael Obafemi (hamstring), and Lyle Foster (suspended). Johann Berg Gudmundsson left the game against Manchester United early due to calf issues and will require a checkup before Saturday. Newcastle has struggled to put on thrilling attacking performances on a regular basis this season, but Howe’s team has rediscovered their defensive guile and shouldn’t have too many obstacles to overcome this weekend to pick up another three points.
