Goias will be looking to end their winless streak when they host Sao Paulo in the Brasileiro. Sao Paulo is attempting to establish itself in the top half of the division. The hosts are facing the prospect of relegation going into this match.
Preview (Goias vs. Sao Paulo)
Goias lost a thrilling 10-goal thriller against relegation rivals Bahia over the weekend. It extending their Brasileiro winless streak to six games. Guilherme, a midfielder for the hosts, managed to score a spectacular brace. Rogerio Ceni’s team outscored the home team by six goals to win the game at Estadio de Haile Pinheiro. Goias, have already suffered their 11th loss of the season. They are currently 18th in the Brasileiro rankings with 12 games remaining. They are one point from safety.
Even though they scored four goals in their last game, Wednesday’s hosts have had a very difficult time finding the back of the net frequently this season. Forwards Joao Magno, Anderson Oliveira, and Julian Palacios have each scored just three goals so far in 2023–24. After being subjected to a frustrating goalless draw by struggling Vasco da Gama on their travels before the international break, Sao Paulo was unable to make it three wins in a row in Brasileiro. Before that moment, Dorival Junior’s team had defeated Coritiba and Corinthians at home by scores of 2-1 each. In the latter victory, Jonathan Calleri scored a spectacular brace in front of a cheering Estadio Cicero Pompeu de Toledo crowd.
Sao Paulo is now ranked 10th in the Brasileiro rankings. They will be vying for a spot in the top six in order to qualify for the upcoming Copa Libertadores. It is a tournament they have won three times, most recently in 2005. High-profile players such as Lucas Moura, James Rodriguez, and Alexandre Pato are among the guests on Wednesday. Since joining from Olympiacos in July, James Rodriguez has made the net tremble once in seven outings.
Team News
Before the game on Wednesday night, Gioas is concerned about a few injuries, including winger Diego, who won’t likely return to duty until later this month as he recovers from a back problem. With striker Gabriel Novaes presently out due to a thigh injury he sustained in the summer, the hosts are also lacking a choice at the head of their offensive line. Because of a thigh issue, Gabriel Neves, a defensive-minded midfielder for Sao Paulo, is also out of the draw against Vasco this time around.
Due to Robert Arboleda’s condition, which is the same as that of his Uruguayan colleague, Alan Franco will start at center back alongside Diego for the visitors. As they gave up six goals to Bahia the last time out, Goias’ impressive defensive efforts from recent games did not continue, and we anticipate that the hosts will find it difficult to contain Sao Paulo’s firepower. On Wednesday night, Rodriguez and company will be hopeful of extending their unbeaten streak in the Brasileiro to four games, and all indicators point to a victory for the visitors.
