Both Getafe and Girona will be looking for their first wins after securing draws on the opening day of the La Liga season. The home side claimed a point in a 1-1 draw with Real Sociedad last time out. Getafe started their 2023-24 campaign with a goalless draw at home to the champions Barcelona.
Preview (Girona vs Getafe)
Last season, Girona had their joint-best La Liga season, finishing 10th in the standings with 49 points from 38 games. They finished just four points behind Osasuna in seventh place. The White and Reds will be vying for the same position this season. Their 1-1 draw at Real Sociedad on the opening weekend of the new campaign can serve as motivation for them. Artem Dovbyk, a recent addition, scored the equalizer in the 72nd minute. Along with Dovbyk, Yangel Herrera, Ivan Martin, Daley Blind, Paulo Gazzaniga, Savio, and Pablo Torre all joined the club this summer as new additions to Michel’s team.
Ramon Terrats joined Villarreal, while Oriol Romeu returned to Barcelona. The club was able to retain most of its key players from the previous campaign. Only one of Girona’s five La Liga games against Getafe has ended in a victory. That victory came in a comparable matchup last season by a score of 3-1. Getafe will be quite confident after their performance on Sunday when they held the champions Barcelona to a scoreless draw. The team led by Jose Bordalas has finished 15th in each of the previous three La Liga seasons.
Getafe made seven new recruits over the summer, including Omar Alderete, Gaston Alvarez, and Portu, who came on permanent contracts after loan stints. This means that Getafe should be looking up the table this season. Sergi Altimira and Choco Lozano have also moved on. Jose Angel Carmona and Daniel Fuzato have signed on a loan basis for the 2023–24 season. Getafe will be looking to improve on their road performance this season after winning just three of their 19 road league games in the disappointing 2022–23 season.
Team News
With Borja Garcia, Toni Villa, Santiago Bueno, and Ibrahima Kebe all out due to injury versus Real Sociedad, Girona will be without four players once more. Dovbyk’s first-half goal could force the forward into the starting lineup, while Valery is also anticipated to be added in a wide position. Torre, a midfielder on loan from Barcelona, is also vying for the starting spot. It looks like the midfielder will once more be listed among the substitutes at the start of the game.
In addition, the visitors will be without the services of Carmona, Luis Milla, Mauro Arambarri, and Enes Unal due to injury. Carles Alena and Juanmi Latasa are expected to remain in their starting positions, therefore head coach Bordalas may only make one change to the lineup from the game against Barcelona. We anticipate a competitive game on Sunday after both sides’ victories against formidable opponents on the first weekend of the new season. Both sides could win the argument, but we are finding it difficult to distinguish between them in this scenario.
Girona 1 – 1 Getafe
