Gambia will face Cameroon in a crucial Group D game at the Africa Cup of Nations. The Scorpions, are already in danger of losing the 2023 AFCON. They will try to play spoiler against the Indomitable Lions, who still have a chance to win.
Preview (Gambia vs. Cameroon)
Gambia’s chances of qualifying for AFCON 2023 seem dim following a second straight loss, this time by a score of 1-0 against the National Elephants of Guinea in Group F. Despite having seven shots on goal without scoring, the Scorpions were unable to tie the score. Tom Saintfiet’s team is still without a point or a goal in the competition after losing their opening match 3-0. With their last group match against Cameroon, they have a slim chance to win some pride.
The Indomitable Lions have defeated the West Africans in all three of their prior meetings. It includes their most recent one in the 2022 AFCON tournament’s knockout round. Cameroon drew 1-1 with Guinea to start their AFCON campaign. Their chances of qualifying for the round of 16 are in jeopardy after suffering a 3-1 loss against Senegal. With just 20 minutes left, Ismaila Sarr’s deflected strike and Habib Diallo’s exquisite finish gave the Indomitable Lions two goals. A glimmer of hope was created by Jean-Charles Castelletto’s late header in the 83rd minute. Any remaining hopes of a comeback were smothered by Sadio Mane’s stoppage-time goal.
With only one point after two games, Rigobert Song’s team is in a scenario where they need to win to advance to the knockout stage against Gambia. Cameroon must wait for Senegal to defeat Guinea to have the chance to automatically qualify, though a victory does not ensure that. However, if they don’t come second, this might improve their chances of qualifying for the knockout stage as one of the top third-place teams.
Team News
Ebou Adams, a midfielder, was sent off against Senegal and missed the team’s last game. However, he will start for Gambia again. Given that his team has failed to score in the tournament, Saintfiet might think about changing up his offensive strategy. This might result in Ali Sowe, Alieu Fadera, and Musa Barrow returning to the attack. After suffering an injury during practice a few days prior to their first game, Cameroon is hoping that Vincent Aboubakar will return for the last group game to provide the much-needed spark in the attack. André Onana, the goalkeeper for Manchester United, was in goal last time out after missing the first game, and he should continue in that role on Tuesday.
