Cadiz are looking for their second win of the season as they welcome Almeria in the La Liga. Almeria is in 19th place after losing its first two games of the 2023–24 season, while the Yellow Submarine are 12th after picking up three points from their first two games.
Preview (Cadiz vs. Almeria)
On August 14, Cadiz defeated Alaves 1-0 to start their 2023–24 season. However, they were unable to capitalize on that one-goal success and lost to Barcelona 2-0. Prior to the international break, the Yellow Submarine will host back-to-back games against Almeria and Villarreal at home. Given that they had the fourth-worst home record in 2022–23, they need to improve this season. This summer, Cadiz was able to add seven new players to their roster. Only two of them—Gonzalo Escalante and Sergi Guardiola—arrived on permanent contracts after flourishing loan stints.
They added Maxi Gomez, Darwin Machis, Javi Hernandez, Lucas Pires, and Jorge Mere on loan. The team appears to be well-prepared to handle the demands of La Liga play. The team led by Sergio Gonzalez finished 14th in La Liga last season. They are currently playing at this level for the fourth straight year. It is their longest streak since the early 1990s. At this point in the season, there isn’t much that can be inferred from the league standings. Almeria is now ranked 19th after losing its first two games. One of just three La Liga teams to do so, along with Sevilla and Granada.
Almeria just avoided relegation from Spain’s first division last season by placing 17th in the table. They finished one point ahead of Real Valladolid in 18th place. It would not be surprising to see Almeria fighting for a position at the bottom of the division once more. On the first night of the new La Liga season, La Union lost 2-0 at home to Rayo Vallecano before losing 3-1 to Real Madrid in front of their own fans on Saturday. This summer, Vicente Moreno’s team was able to add eight new players, and there were also a number of departures, giving the squad a new appearance for the upcoming campaign.
Team News
Mere, Guardiola, Victor Chust, and Brian Ocampo will all be out for Cadiz again due to injuries. Although Escalante is back after serving a suspension against Barcelona the last time around. The team that began at Camp Nou won’t likely see many changes under head coach Sergio. Machis might make his debut in the final third. Leo Baptistao and Martin Svidersky, who play for Almeria, will miss the match because of injury issues.
Marc Pubill should keep his spot at right-back despite the competition that now exists in that part of the field, while Adri Embarba will again operate off the right. Last season, both games between the two teams ended in a 1-1 draw, and we came very close to achieving that result again today. However, Cadiz has made encouraging progress so far in the new season, and we are expecting the local team to successfully navigate their way to a victory in this game.
