Arsenal vs Liverpool: Preview
Arsenal form analysis
The Gunners began this run of fixtures with impressive resolve, battling to a gritty 1-1 draw away to title rivals Liverpool despite going behind early to Gabriel’s own goal. However, their form then suffered a blip as the Gunners unexpectedly fell 2-0 at home to West Ham, with uncharacteristically slack defending allowing goals from Soucek and Mavropanos. Arsenal responded well though, immediately getting back to winning ways with an emphatic 5-0 home thrashing of Crystal Palace to make a statement of intent.
But doubts resurfaced once more as Arsenal failed to build on this momentum, losing 2-1 away to strugglers Fulham despite Saka’s early opener. This setback clearly served as motivation however, with Arsenal returning to their ruthless best to sweep aside Nottingham Forest 2-1 despite a late consolation. So while blips show Arsenal still have room for greater consistency, their strength of response highlights the grit and determination that sets championship sides apart. Maintaining this reactionary mindset game-to-game will be key if Mikel Arteta’s men are to maintain their form this season.
Liverpool form analysis
Liverpool’s form over this run of fixtures has shown promising signs of an impending resurgence after an inconsistent first half of the season. They battled impressively to hold league-leaders Arsenal 1-1 despite falling behind early, showing spirit through Salah’s equalizer. This proved a platform to build momentum as Liverpool went and ground out a 2-0 win away at Burnley thanks to goals from Nunez and Jota. They carried this into an enthralling 4-2 victory over Newcastle in their next game, a seven-goal thriller settled by Salah’s brace and further goals from summer signings Jones and Gakpo.
Liverpool clicked fully into gear by dispatching Bournemouth 4-0 in their next match, Nunez and Jota grabbing braces in a ruthless attacking showcase. Any doubts of them turning a corner were dismissed in comprehensively defeating top-four rivals Chelsea 4-1 in their last game, the free-scoring form evidence of Klopp finally instilling the swagger back into his Liverpool side. Building momentum, the Reds look primed to stay at the top of the table.
