Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy Rebranded as Centre for Badminton Excellence
Decades of Legacy
After more than thirty years since its establishment, the renowned Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy has undergone a significant transformation. The academy, named after the legendary badminton player who made history by winning the 1980 All England title, has now been rebranded as the Centre for Badminton Excellence (CBE) as of October 1.
Founded in 1994 by Prakash Padukone, former National champion U. Vimal Kumar, and sports promoter Vivek Kumar, the academy has been a hub for elite badminton training in India. Over the years, top players like P. Gopichand, Saina Nehwal, P.V. Sindhu, and Lakshya Sen have honed their skills at this prestigious institution.
A New Chapter
With Padukone’s decision to step down and focus on the Padukone School of Badminton (PSB), Vimal and Vivek are now in charge of the CBE. The Padukone-Dravid Centre for Sports Excellence, where the academy was previously located, will now house both the CBE and a unit of the PSB.
Vimal shared, “Prakash had been indicating this transition for some time as he wanted to shift his focus towards school training. However, the players and coaches at the academy remain unchanged, ensuring continuity in training and development.”
Commitment to Excellence
Reflecting on the growth and evolution of the academy, Vimal expressed nostalgia for the early days of setting up one of India’s first private badminton academies. He emphasized the continuous support from sponsors like Infosys Foundation and the unwavering commitment to training India’s best badminton talent.
“Our academy has evolved significantly since its inception, offering state-of-the-art facilities for training. Vivek has been a pillar of support throughout our journey. Despite these changes, our core mission remains unchanged – to nurture and develop the next generation of badminton champions in India,” Vimal added.

The rebranding of the Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy to the Centre for Badminton Excellence marks a new chapter in the storied history of the institution. With a renewed focus on training and excellence, the CBE is poised to continue its legacy of producing top-tier badminton players who can compete on the global stage.
