Piers Morgan on England loss to Afghanistan: “Jeez, get a grip England”
England were handed a humiliating defeat by Afghanistan at Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi. It wasn’t the day for World Cup winners who were taken apart by blazing batting display of young Afghanistani batters followed by a top quality dominance with the ball in second half of the bat.
English journalist and media personality Pierce Morgan who is avid follower of England cricket team was absolutely disappointed with the way England lost to Afghanistan. Morgan shared on his X account:
“Still trying to get my head round this humiliation, but struggling to understand how on earth it happened. Congrats to Afghanistan on their historic win, but jeez, get a grip England – we’re supposed to be the best white ball cricket team in the world. Start playing like it!”
Morgan has always vocal about England team’s performance. During the Ashes 2023, he criticised Australian cricket team for their lack of spirit in Jonny Bairstow run-out saga. This time around, English fans are so disappointed and gutted with the way World Cup champions have performed.
England lost to New Zealand in the first match of Cricket World Cup 2023. It wasn’t an easy match for England as the World Cup 2019 finalists one-sidedly chased down 283 runs target. England did find a win against Bangladesh but lost too many wickets in the final 10 overs. Barring Dawid Malan and Joe Root, none of English batter contributed much to the victory.
Jos Buttler hasn’t been the best of captains for England
Since his ascendency to captaincy, Jos Buttler has led England in 24 ODI matches. His winning record is 50-50, having won 12 and lost as many in which comes, 3-0 series loss to Australia and 2-1 loss to South Africa. Buttler himself hasn’t played a match winning knock in last 10 months or so.
Captains are looked up as guys who can set the examples and Buttler is potentially considering himself a match finisher, hoping to bat in last 10 overs but that hasn’t happened too often. England are prone to loose wickets in the powerplay and middle overs.

Their bowling is undercooked. None of English bowler has played regular ODIs for the team and with that being said, they are heavily missing the presence of Jofra Archer. It doesn’t swing much in Indian conditions and bowlers who bowl 130 kmph deliveries are often distorted by the modern batters.
English bowlers were obliterated by Rahmanullah Gurbaz who hit the ball wonderfully all around the park. But more than that, it was bad bowling by England, particularly Sam Curran and Chris Woakes who looked almost tired and flat, disinterested to perform for England. Hence, if England feels they can call themselves World champions then at least, they have put on display the attitude of World champions.
