Will Virat Kohli Lose his T20 World Cup Spot: Room for the Veteran?
As per media reports, speculations are swirling about Virat Kohli being excluded from India’s squad for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024.
A recent report suggested that the selectors might favor younger players like Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma, citing their suitability for the T20 format and the West Indies/USA conditions.
This potential exclusion has sparked debate. Former Pakistani pacer Mohammad Irfan became a vocal supporter of Kohli’s inclusion.
“You can’t have a team without Virat Kohli,” Irfan declared, highlighting Kohli’s match-winning performances in the 2023 ODI World Cup. “I have no doubts about it. He is a tremendous batsman,” said Irfan while talking to a local news channel.
“We witnessed it in the ODI World Cup last year, where he won 3-4 matches almost single-handedly. Had Kohli not stepped up on those occasions, India would have lost group-stage encounters against Australia and New Zealand.”

The debate hinges on two key factors: experience versus current form. Kohli’s past achievements are undeniable. He is the highest run-scorer for India in T20Is and a proven performer in high-pressure situations.
However, his recent form in the T20 format has been a concern. The selectors might be looking for players with a more aggressive approach that thrives on fast scoring, a strategy well-suited to the slam-bang nature of T20 cricket.
The final decision on the squad rests with the selectors. Whether they prioritize Kohli’s experience and leadership, or opt for players demonstrating peak form in the shortest format, will be a crucial call that could significantly impact India’s chances at the T20 World Cup 2024.
Virat Kohli has been out of the game since T20I series against Afghanistan. He had a great ganes against South Africa in 2 match test series. However, he decided to take break from cricket due to personal reasons.
