Oval Invincibles, Southern Brave Win The Hundred Finals at the Lord’s
Oval Invincibles have won the Men’s the Hundred tournament of 2023 edition. The final was played between Manchester Originals led by Jos Buttler and Oval Invincibles led by Sam Curran.
Winning the toss, Jos Buttler decided to bowl first and the Lord’s Cricket Ground. Richard Gleeson striked straightaway by removing dangerous Jason Roy for naught. Will Jacks and Paul Stirling couldn’t contribute much either, and Sam Curran was sent back to pavallion by Josh Little for a duck.
The match looked to go in the Originals way as the Ovals were 34/5 in 35 balls. Not an ideal position to be in the finals, however, there were batters left who turned the match on its head. The pair of Jimmy Neesham and Tom Curran found the team in deep struggle and ushered it out to a score of 161 runs.
Neesham scored 57 runs off 33 balls while the senior Curran scored 67 runs off 34 balls with 4 fours and 5 massive sixes coming from his bat. Tom Curran batted to well, like a proper batter with incredible strength. His innings swinged the game in Ovals’ favour and it remained so till the end.
Curran finished the match with a six which is always about carrying the momentum to the next innings. That was Curran’s mind blowing batting innings, now coming to bowl, he removed Phil Salt who was batting well. The previous match’s hero for the Originals, captain Jos Buttler could only score 11 runs in 15 balls before being bowled by Danny Briggs.
Only Max Holden could cross the 30 runs mark in entire Originals’ batting line-up. They showed some fight towards the end but the chase looked improbable for them. After scoring 67 off 34 balls, Tom Curran conceded only 25 runs in his 20 balls spell and picked a crucial wicket of Phil Salt.
It all resulted in 14 runs victory for Oval Invincibles over Manchester Originals in the final of the hundred 2023. “Everyone keeps saying that I’ve improved my batting but I don’t see it that way”, Tom Curran, player of the match in final said after the victory.
Southern Brave Clinch Final Victory in Women’s the Hundred Final
In women’s the Hundred final, Southern Brave defeated Northern Superchargers at the Lord’s Cricket Ground by 34 runs. After losing previous two finals to Oval Invincibles, this time around, the Braves were ready to give their best and have their hands on coveted trophy.
This wasn’t an easy win, batting first, Braves found themselves 8/2 and only due to sensational batting effort of Danny Wyatt (59 runs of 38 balls) and Freya Kemp (31 runs off 17 balls), the team was able to post 139 runs on board.
It was a difficult chase for Northern Superchargers who kept losing wicktets at regular intervals, only Jemimah Rodrigues could score 24 runs in 14 balls. Lauren Bell bowled beautifully and ended up with figures of 19 balls: 21 runs: 3 wickets. 20 years old Kalea Moore was no less exceptional, picking up 3 wickets in her 20 balls spell for 15 runs.
England’s World Cup winner Anya Shrubsole played her last professional game at this tournament. Shrubsole, 31, was leading Southern Brave in this tournament. “I couldn’t think of a better way to end my career than this. It’s hard to put into words,” Shrubsole said after winning the Hundred.
