Following an intense encounter between the Delhi Capitals (DC) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the Women’s Premier League (WPL 2024) league stage match at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi, former Indian cricket player Reema Malhotra contemplated a crucial moment that could plague Richa Ghosh for an extended period. March 10, after DC had set RCB a formidable 182-run target in Delhi, Richa’s brilliant 51 off 29 balls fueled hopes of victory.
Fate, however, had other ideas as she failed to reach the crease on the final ball, trying a vital single with RCB requiring two runs to win. As Malhotra watched the replay of the game, she knew Richa would be disappointed to see herself dismissed. Despite the loss, Malhotra thought the wicketkeeper-batter from Bangalore had learned a valuable lesson.
WPL 2024:
Malhotra stated on Sports18’s post-match program, “The run would have been finished if she had started running as soon as she struck the ball. I promise that after seeing this replay, you will cry. You too wept on the ground, but sometimes the tears of grief teach you something. You are learning that you should run with the shot regardless of whether the ball clears the fielder or not. The split second that caused you to lose will keep you up for many nights.”
Towards the end of the thrilling WPL 2024 match, the stumper-batter took Jess Jonassen’s delivery and tried to find a gap in the off-side field for a crucial couple. But Shafali Verma’s hands were directly hit by her stroke at the backward point. Because of Verma’s fast reflexes, Jonassen was able to field the ball and end up running out the batter. Malhotra praised her for her heroic efforts in sustaining RCB’s hopes until the very end, despite the disappointment.
She said, “We maintained that Richa Ghosh lived up to the expectations and kept RCB’s hopes alive until her arrival. She performed flawlessly in every way. The shot selection was excellent; she played the big shots and maintained possession of the ball when needed.”
