Women’s Premier League 2024 update:
The inaugural season of the WPL was a huge success, showcasing top talent from all over the world, with the exception of Pakistan. The tournament featured 22 matches and was held at three different locations in Mumbai. As of now, the BCCI has not informed the franchises of the second edition’s dates and format, which will include home-and-away fixtures at multiple venues or the previous single-city format.
Seven players clinched impressive deals worth INR 2 crore during the previous year’s auction, with three-star players, namely Smriti Mandhana, Ashleigh Gardner, and Nat Sciver-Brunt, breaking the INR 3-crore mark. In the inaugural WPL season, teams were given a budget of INR 12 crore (approximately US $1.44 million) to assemble their squads, and two of the five franchises used the entire amount.
The reigning champions, the Mumbai Indians, and the UP Warriorz, have full budgets. Gujarat Giants have INR 5 lakhs (approximately US $6007), Delhi Capitals have INR 35 lakhs (approximately US $42,053), and Royal Challengers Bangalore have INR 10 lakhs (approximately US $12,015) as their remaining balance.
According to previous reports, the WPL 2024 will be played in a home-and-away format similar to the Indian Premier League (IPL). In addition, BCCI released a list of players for the upcoming WPL season, with the five participating teams sharing lists of retained 60 players and 29 released players.
