‘What wrong has Rohit done?’ – Sidhu on MI captaincy change

MI captaincy change: Former cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu discussed the outcry directed at captain Hardik Pandya by Mumbai Indians supporters. According to Sidhu, the general public finds it difficult to accept that a player who is expected to captain India at a major international tournament like the T20 World Cup is not captaining his IPL team.

But he believed that if the Mumbai Indians could find a winning formula, all the commotion would end. Notably, after losing their first three games in the IPL 2024, Hardik and company have yet to register a point.

Sidhu stated in a Star Sports Press Room chat that there wouldn’t have been any uproar if he had won these two matches. He said, “Nobody can comprehend that our franchise’s captain is not the national hero and captain of India. What has he done wrong? It is likely what fans of the franchise are asking themselves.”

He further added, “However, what does he need to do? Nothing is as successful as success. The team would not have selected Hardik as captain for the T20 World Cup in October if the BCCI had declared Rohit the captain. It has to do with the franchise’s esteem. Thus, timing is really the problem here.”

Navjot Singh stated, “The most important requirement for a team to succeed is that they cannot rely on any one person to win. We do discuss Faf du Plessis and Virat Kohli, but you have to put the appropriate horse in the saddle. They are poor in the spin department, and a chain is only as strong as its weakest link. They just don’t have enough spinners, so they’ll need to restock that section. For example, RCB possessed the talented (Wanindu) Hasaranga, and even better than him was Yuzvendra Chahal.”

He went on to say, “However, they let them go, which left a hole in their lineup for bowling. Because they haven’t been able to close that gap, RCB is predictable. Now see (MS) Dhoni; nobody is aware of his strategy when he arrives. Nevertheless, RCB’s bowling is incredibly predictable. They lack a good spinner and will only field four quick bowlers.”

When asked if the 2024 IPL would have a big impact on Team India’s selection for the T20 globe Cup, Sidhu responded, “The IPL is the centre of the world. It’s like taking part in a mini World Cup when you play in the Indian Premier League right before the World Cup. A fantastic performance here has the potential to instantly make you famous. Anyone who performs well in the IPL therefore becomes a serious contender.”
