Tiwari says Hardik Pandya will face audience heat in Mumbai

The Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings, and Royal Challengers Bengaluru have among of the most devoted fan bases of any IPL team; practically everyone would rate these three teams in the top three. It has always been and will continue to be a nightmare experience for a cricket player to play against MI at the Wankhede, CSK at Chepauk, and RCB at the Chinnaswamy as a member of the opposition. Hardik Pandya is currently the talk of the town.

Although it is well known that MI will have the same level of support from the Wankhede fans as in previous seasons, the same cannot be said of Hardik Pandya, MI’s recently anointed captain.

As everyone is aware, Rohit Sharma has won five IPL titles since taking over as captain halfway through the 2013 edition of the premier league, making him the joint-most successful skipper in IPL history. But MI’s performance in the last three editions has fallen short of expectations; in the 2021, 2022, and 2023 seasons, they finished fifth, tenth (a franchise low), and fourth, respectively.

Even still, nobody would have truly predicted that the MI management would hand the captaincy reins from Rohit to Hardik—yes, the same player who recently entered the team after playing for the Gujarat Titans for two full seasons.

Social media has been at its most ferocious ever since the captaincy transfer was made public, causing a great deal of hatred among fans and commentators alike. This was further demonstrated during the match between GT and MI a few days ago, in which Hardik was roundly jeered by the audience each time his image was shown on the big screen.

Similarly, former Indian cricketer Manoj Tiwary had a sixth sense that, because of the unexpected change in captaincy, Hardik would be derided by MI supporters as well as those of Rohit at MI’s home ground, the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

“You have to see how he gets welcomed here in Mumbai, because I think he is going to get booed a bit louder here, because as a fan, Mumbai fan or a Rohit Sharma fan, nobody expected that captaincy would be given to Hardik,” Tiwary was reported to have said by the Indian Express.

Considering the enormous heights to which he has led the team over the years, he further stated that he had no idea why Rohit felt compelled to give Hardik the captaincy. However, he was positive that supporters couldn’t understand the choice.

“And Rohit has to give up the captaincy even though he gave the Mumbai Indians five trophies. I’m not sure why, but I believe it hasn’t been properly received by the fans,” Tiwary said.

The 38-year-old emphasized that Pandya must put aside distractions and give it his all if he wants to be in the running for the T20 World Cup, which is scheduled for June of this year. He said that since he was the best all-around player, it was even more important for him to stay in peak physical condition so that he could play at his best.

According to Tiwary, “I think he needs to perform well to be selected for the Indian World Cup squad, even if he wasn’t jeered. Being the best all-around player, he must undoubtedly be in form, and in order to be in form, he must deliver results.”
