Rohit Sharma urges crowd to stop ‘boos’ for Hardik Pandya

Hardik Pandya, the captain of the Mumbai Indians, was subjected to hostile crowd behaviour on his first visit to his home ground, Wankhede Stadium, on Monday, April 1. The all-rounder was welcomed with loud boos during the toss, prompting commentator Sanjay Manjrekar to ask the crowd to behave.

The animosity at the venue escalated when Pandya failed to salvage Mumbai’s innings after they were reduced to 20/4 after 3.3 overs and were dismissed for twenty-one (21). Just when Pandya thought things couldn’t get any worse, he ended up dropping Jos Buttler at covers during the fourth over as deafening ‘boos’ enveloped the Wankhede stadium.

With everything working against him, the MI captain forced a wry smile on his face and looked up to the sky, pleading with the higher powers for assistance. When former MI captain Rohit Sharma noticed the disgusting crowd behaviour that his replacement was subjected to, he intervened on his behalf and motioned to the fans to quiet down while fielding on the boundary.

Apart from this, the five-time winners were playing their first home game at Mumbai’s storied Wankhede Stadium during the Indian Premier League 2024. After winning the toss, the Rajasthan Royals chose to bat first. A sea of Rohit Sharma fans heckled and jeered the native of Baroda at the home venue. It’s fascinating to see how quickly the video gained popularity on social media after match presenter Sanjay Manjrekar asked the audience to behave.

Manjrekar said at the toss, “Everything is ready for the toss. Hardik Pandya, the captain of the Mumbai Indians, is here with me. Thank you so much, gentlemen and ladies. Behave.”

Hardik Pandya has been the talk of the town lately, but not in a good way. Shortly after taking over for longstanding captain Rohit Sharma, the new Mumbai Indians captain has been the target of taunts and jeers from all sides. The Mumbai skipper received a lot of flak from the supporters and on social media in the team’s opening two away games.
