India skipper Rohit Sharma is regarded as one of the greatest white-ball batters of the current age. Rohit’s career has taken a dramatic turn after former India captain MS Dhoni promoted him to begin the innings in 2013. Since then, the Nagpur-born batsman has astounded the cricketing world with his incredible stroke play across all formats. Now, Rohit Sharma reacts to the thought of breaking Chris Gayle’s record.
Rohit is noted for his six-hitting ability in addition to being a technically sound batter. The Indian captain is now second in the list of most sixes in international cricket and is only 14 sixes away from tying West Indies legend Chris Gayle at the top. When asked about the likelihood of breaking the world record for most sixes in international cricket, the 36-year-old joked that it would be a one-of-a-kind record if he did.
“It will be a one-of-a-kind record if I can break it. I never imagined I’d be able to smash Chris Gayle’s record one day (laughs). It’s funny but okay (flexes his bicep),” Rohit Sharma stated in a YouTube interview with Vimal Kumar.
Rohit Sharma laughs on breaking Chris Gayle’s record:
Notably, Rohit has 539 sixes from 446 international matches, trailing only Chris Gayle on the leaderboard, who has 553 maximums from 483 encounters. The Indian captain is set to break the record in the ongoing congested cricket schedule until the end of the ODI World Cup in 2023.
Aside from that, he holds the record for the most sixes in T20Is (182) and the third most in ODIs (280). When asked if he aspires to play 100 Tests, the opening batter replied that he doesn’t plan too far ahead in his life.
“I don’t plan ahead of time like this. I don’t plan too far ahead; right now, I’m focusing on the Asia Cup and World Cup 2023. We even have a brief series versus Australia at home, so I’m currently focusing on these short-term ambitions. That is how I am in my life; what happens in the future is determined by what you do today. That’s why I’m concentrating on these things right now,” he explained.
Notably, the 36-year-old has only played 52 Tests in his career, and given his age, 100 Test matches may be a pipe dream for the Indian skipper. He would, however, be more concerned with leading his country to World Cup triumph after 12 years on home soil.
