Police further probe molestation claim against Prithvi Shaw

Police in Mumbai have been ordered by a court to look into claims made by a social media influencer that Indian batsman Prithvi Shaw has been molested. The influencer, Sapna Gill, said that Shaw had molested her in an Andheri suburban bar, prompting the court’s decision. She claimed that despite her accusation, the police did not file a case against the cricket player.

Gill first reported the incident in February, saying that Shaw had molested her while they were arguing at a bar. She then went to the Andheri police and accused Shaw of molestation and hurting others with a potentially harmful weapon. However, after reviewing CCTV footage and interviewing witnesses, police decided not to file a formal complaint, citing a lack of proof.

Feeling let down by the police, Gill went to the Mumbai Metropolitan Magistrate’s court. The 24-year-old cricket player, who is now competing for the Delhi Capitals in the upcoming IPL 2024, has been the target of Gill’s complaint, and the court has now ordered police to look into it. Police have been instructed by Metropolitan Magistrate S.C. Tayde to turn up a report on their inquiry by June 19.

Gill says that Shaw touched her inappropriately during the altercation at the pub, but the batsman has strongly refuted this. According to police, CCTV evidence showed Gill smashing the glass in Shaw’s car and pursuing him down with a baseball bat, but it did not show any molestation. Additionally, witnesses seem to have corroborated the police’s account of what happened.

Initially, Gill had demanded punishment from the police for failing to register a formal complaint against them. The court, however, rejected this plea and ordered a further probe into her allegations of molestation against Shaw and his companion Ashish Yadav. The social media personality had asked that the FIR be filed under IPC sections 354 (molestation), 509 (word, gesture, or act designed to insult a woman’s modesty), and 324 (voluntary harm caused by dangerous weapons or means).

During the season opener against Punjab Kings (PBKS), the Mumbai-born cricket player competing in the 17th edition of the lucrative tournament was left out of DC’s starting lineup. In the subsequent match against Chennai Super Kings, he was added back into the playing XI and helped Delhi win by 20 runs with a score of 43 off 27 balls. He could only muster 10 runs in his second-season matchup with the Kolkata Knight Riders, as the Delhi-based team dropped their third straight game.
