The Indian squad has performed admirably in the 2023 ODI World Cup. India’s World Cup squad, captained by Rohit Sharma, has not dropped a match in the esteemed competition. The team’s excellent form may largely be attributed to the lineups and rotations they have employed thus far.
The veteran Ravichandran Ashwin, an ace all-rounder, was not even considered for selection in the World Cup team until Axar Patel got hurt. In their inaugural match against Australia, the 37-year-old even made an appearance for India. He hasn’t played yet, though, as India substituted Shardul Thakur for him in their last two matches.
Speaking about the ongoing rotations, former India chairman of selectors MSK Prasad stood up and cited Mohammed Shami and Ashwin as examples of players who are not promised selections even though they are big stars for the team. He also praised the team for fielding outstanding lineups that were appropriate for the circumstances.
Prasad on India’s World Cup squad:
“The team management is doing exactly the correct thing. Playing Ashwin is a smart option if the wickets are favourable for spinners; if the pitch is flat, someone like Shardul may contribute with both and the ball becomes an alternative. In terms of Shami, I believe he will only play if the team management determines that Siraj or Bumrah need to be rested. With this kind of equilibrium, they are extremely well placed,” MSK Prasad told the Hindustan Times.
Prasad continued by saying that Ashwin would concur with questions regarding the team’s rotation choices and that all members of the squad have agreed upon the lineup that will be used in the 2023 ODI World Cup.
“Ashwin will concur with the team management’s choice if you question him. Do we proceed just on reputation or do we need to win the championship? If reputation is any guide, Shami ought to be playing instead of Siraj. There’s a lot of togetherness on this crew.” Prasad remarked.
Concluding his statement, Prasad expressed, “Everyone is on board with this pairing. As a supporter, I find it painful to see Shami sitting outside, but when I consider things from the captain’s viewpoint, I think his choices are excellent. They are not based on their standing. By fielding the best XI on that specific day against that specific opposition, they hope to win the tournament,”
