Manjrekar asks crowd to behave after boos for Hardik Pandya

Recently, Hardik Pandya has become the buzz of the town for all the wrong reasons. Trolls and jeers have been directed at the new Mumbai Indians captain from all directions shortly after he succeeded longtime skipper Rohit Sharma in the captaincy role. The Mumbai captain faced a great deal of criticism from the crowd and on social media during the team’s first two road games.

During the Indian Premier League 2024, the five-time winners were playing their first home game at Mumbai’s legendary Wankhede Stadium. The Rajasthan Royals won the toss and decided to bat first. At the home arena, a sea of Rohit Sharma supporters heckled and booed the Baroda native. It’s interesting to note that when match presenter Sanjay Manjrekar requested the audience to behave, the footage quickly became popular on social media.

At the toss, Manjrekar commanded, “Everything is ready for the toss. Both of the captains are here with me: Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya. Thank you very much, ladies and gentlemen. Behave.”

On the other hand, the Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya is reportedly given extra security at Wankhede, but the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) has denied these reports. Pandya’s selection as captain was met with resistance from many fans following the all-around player’s move from Gujarat Titans.

Pandya has already faced a great deal of backlash, including racist taunts during the 2024 Indian Premier League. Mumbai’s defeat in the team’s first two games of the season added fuel to the already growing resentment that seems to be growing daily.

The five-time champions will take on the Rajasthan Royals in their first home game of the year in the interim. Before then, there were whispers that MCA had tightened security at Wankhede and threatened to kick out anyone who heckled or harassed Hardik during the match. However, MCA clarified in a recent statement that none of these events has been scheduled since they will comply with BCCI’s crowd behaviour policy guidelines.
