On Tuesday, October 18, in Dharamsala, the Netherlands delivered a knockout blow to South Africa in the ODI World Cup 2023. The ace player Temba Bavuma gave out a statement on their huge heartbreaking loss.
In a rain-shortened 43-over match per side, the Dutch team rallied from 82/5 and 140/7 to 245/8. The Proteas, in response, fought valiantly to be dismissed for 207, falling short by 38 runs. After the game, South Africa’s captain, Temba Bavuma, admitted that the loss would be painful after leading his team to two straight victories to begin the competition. He added that his team needed to remember this setback.
Bavuma stated during the post-game ceremony, “You have to let the feeling sort of soak in. I don’t think attempting to ignore what happened is worthwhile. It should hurt, and it will hurt. However, you return the following day, wake up, and we resume our adventure. By no means is our campaign done, but you must experience today’s emotions and return tomorrow with your head held high.”
Player Temba Bavuma comments:
Bavuma believed that the South African team should restrict their excessive bowling, which totalled 31 in an unexpected amount, moving forward in the ODI World Cup. Moreover, they performed poorly on the pitch, which is hard to connect with them.
The right-handed hitter continued, “It’s something you can manage the extras. It will always be detrimental to you to receive thirty (31) extras or an additional five overs. Whether it is a matter of competence or complacency, that is a discussion for us to have, but in the end, it did matter quite a little. Although we played Australia very well, the challenge was always to repeat that performance when we returned.”
The cricketer further added, “The fielding was not of a high calibre. Once more, there is a clear difference in the calibre of our team when compared to how we played against Australia. We must have such dialogues. The guys must provide their own answers to the inquiries on their mental states. From a fielding perspective, that’s obviously not the level we’d like to demonstrate.”
