Rinku Singh against GT (IPL 2023)
Because there was so much drama during the Gujarat Titans vs. KKR match in the 2023 Indian Premier League, it was more than just a magical match. The true drama happened when teenage left-hander Rinku Singh hit five sixes in Yash Dayal’s final over, with the fifth coming on the final ball of the game to give his team the victory.
The Gujarat Titans had complete control of the game, but Rinku Singh had other ideas. He used his bat to work magic, helping his team win the match that appeared to be impossible by hitting a six on the final ball.
Rahul Tewatia against PBKS (IPL 2022)
Rahul Tewatia not only smacked the final ball of this IPL match for a six, but he also smashed the final two deliveries of Odean Smith’s 20th over for sixes, much like Jadeja did for CSK back in the 2020 IPL! Excitingly, he enabled the Gujarat Titans to win their third IPL title by making 19 runs off the last over.
Srikar Bharat against DC (IPL 2021)
A vital six was hit in the last ball of an IPL match, which also signaled the end of the round-robin round. RCB could have guaranteed second place and a simpler route to the championship game if they had prevailed. Those aspirations were dashed, though, when Virat Kohli chose to field first, allowing RCB to struggle at 55 for 3, trailing DC’s 164.
At first, it appeared as though the game would conclude without incident. Even though DC had already taken the lead, they let opportunities pass them by, which allowed Glenn Maxwell and Srikar Bharat to salvage the RCB innings. Nortje bowled a tight over with 19 runs required off 12 balls.
On the first ball of the last over, Maxwell struck a boundary, but the rest of the deliveries saw RCB struggle to score.
RCB was able to get a pair thanks to a misfield by DC, requiring 8 runs off of 2 balls. Avesh Khan’s poor delivery and subsequent full toss, with six needed off the final ball, was punished by Bharat, who crushed it for a six over long-on, sealing an exciting victory for RCB.
Ravindra Jadeja against KKR (IPL 2020)
When you can hit the final two balls to win an IPL match, why settle for hitting the final ball for a six? In this game, Ravindra Jadeja performed precisely that. Regrettably, the COVID-19 pandemic prevented any fans from attending to see this thrilling conclusion. CSK only scored three runs off the first four balls in the last over, despite needing to score ten. After that, Ravindra Jadeja took the lead and won the match with two enormous sixes in his characteristic flashy style.
Nicholas Pooran against RCB (IPL 2020)
With Chris Gayle and KL Rahul both at the crease and set, this game looked to be heading toward an easy win for KXIP, who needed just two runs to win from the final over. However, Nicholas Pooran entered the middle of the pitch, applying ten times greater pressure on the opposition, when Gayle was run out in the penultimate delivery of the match, having hit just one ball off the first four.
Never one to give up, Pooran hit the game’s opening ball and, eventually, the last ball for six runs to seal this IPL 2020 triumph.
Mitchell Santner against RR (IPL 2019)
Similar circumstances occurred for Stokes in this thrilling IPL encounter as they did in 2016, when he was hit four times in a row during the World T20 final. Mitch Santner sealed the victory this time by smashing the last ball for six. CSK needed eighteen runs in the last over to win.
The drama began when Ravindra Jadeja hit a six off the first ball, cutting the target down to 12 from 5 balls. Santner finished the game with composure, making the necessary eight runs off the last three balls, including the game-winning six off the penultimate ball.
MS Dhoni against KXIP (IPL 2016)
It was well worth the wait when MS Dhoni eventually made it onto the list of six batters to win an IPL match for Rising Pune in 2016 after coming close to doing so a few times! Dhoni struck two sixes and a four to cap off an amazing triumph with just five balls remaining and 22 required to be scored.
Speaking about IPL match-winning sixes, I wouldn’t feel complete without bringing up one of the best finishers in cricket history.
Dwayne Bravo against KKR (IPL 2012)
The Batsmen’s last-ball sixes to win games in the Indian Premier League (2012) were legendary. However, at about the midway point of the game, you would have been given some slim chances of making it to the final ball, much less striking it for a six to win.
CSK was coasting at 96 all without losing after ten overs, but they lost both of their openers in three balls, which put an end to their run-scoring. Before MS Dhoni’s dismissal, which left the visitors needing eight from four balls, they were still the favorites and needed nine off the last over.
After missing his first attempt to put the ball in the stands, Dwayne Bravo’s stroke changed the equation to 5 from 2, and he hammered the game’s penultimate ball for six to give CSK the win.
