In a recent social media post, Indian chess player Divya Deshmukh accused viewers of sexism. Following the conclusion of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament in Wijk aan Zed, she made a post about this. She participated in the Challengers division, earning 4.5 out of 13 points to place 12th. However, she expressed her disappointment with the way fans treated female athletes after the event.
She said, “I was waiting for my tournament to end before I addressed this, but I’ve been wanting to for a while. I’ve been told and have personally observed that women in chess are frequently ignored by onlookers. The 18-year-old stated in a social media post on Sunday, My most recent example of this on a personal level would be in this tournament, I played a few games that I felt were quite good and I was proud of them.”
Indian Chess player Divya Deshmukh:
She further added, “I’ve heard from people that the audience didn’t even care about the game; instead, they were fixated on everything that could possibly be going on, including my accent, clothes, and hair. I was very disappointed to hear this, and I believe it to be the sad reality that when women play chess, people frequently underestimate their skill, strength, and ability.”
Divya also stated, “I was really disappointed to see how the audience discussed everything we talked about in my interviews, with the exception of my games. It’s a sad thing that not many people paid attention to it. In a way, I thought it was unfair because if I went to any guy’s interview, there would be real compliments about the player and the game and much less personal judgement.”
Furthermore, she added “I think men would probably get away with the same things, but women are undervalued and every insignificant thing is focused on and hated on them. I believe that women deal with this every day, and I’m only eighteen. Over the years, I have encountered a great deal of hatred and judgment for trivial matters. I believe that women should be treated with equal respect.”
