Asian Games 2023: The Women in Blue were aiming to duplicate the Men’s Asia Cup 2023 victory in the gold-medal match between India and Sri Lanka. The Lankan Lionesses, on the other hand, wanted to exact revenge on their men. The Women’s Asia Cup champions chose to bat first after winning the toss in this match. It was really challenging to bat on the wicket, especially for inexperienced batsmen.
The team led by Harmanpreet Kaur struggled to get going with the bat. Anushka Sanjeewani stumped Shafali Varma (9 off 15 balls) off Sugnadika Kumari. At 16/1, Smriti Mandhana, the vice-captain, and Jemimah Rodrigues combined for 73 runs for the second wicket. They appeared capable of advancing the team past 120–130. But other that, no player was able to surpass double digits. The team went from being 89/1 to 116/7.
Udeshika Prabodhani, Kumari, and Inoka Ranaweera each claimed two wickets for the Lankans. The island nation’s team, in reply, got off to a slow start, losing three wickets for 14 runs. Titas Sadhu, a graduate of the U19 World Cup 2023 winning effort earlier this year, took all of these wickets. At this point, Hasini Perera and Nilakshi de Silva combined for a fourth-wicket partnership of 37 runs.
Indian Women in Asian Games 2023:
Both batters kept their teams in the game with a few boundaries in between. Rajeshwari Gaekwad, who had been hammered for a four and a six, exacted revenge by dismissing Perera in the tenth over. Following this, the Indian bowlers were able to control the run flow, raise the needed run rate, and create difficulties for their adversaries.
The most efficient spell in women’s cricket was bowled by Sadhu, who claimed the first three wickets. She completed her allotted four overs of bowling while allowing only six runs, matching Radha Yadav’s 2019 4-2-6-3 against the West Indies. India ultimately prevailed to take home the gold medal by 19 runs. The Lankans were held to a total of 97/8.
