Cricketer Gambhir, a former Indian cricketer, was recently interviewed on Smita Prakash’s ANI Podcast. The 42-year-old revealed an intriguing incident involving Ashish Nehra during the 2014 IPL season.
Gautam Gambhir was struggling with the bat for his team, the Kolkata Knight Riders. The left-handed batter had three consecutive strikeouts in his first three games of the season. This made him wonder if he should drop himself for the fourth game.

Gautam Gambhir wasn’t in the best of moods after scoring yet another duck during the IPL 2014 season. The KKR captain then recalled, “Four of five Delhi guys were sitting together at the dinner table.” Ashish Nehra placed an order for a duck. He told me to eat the duck or else I might get another duck in the next match. I got a taste of it, scored one run in the next game, and Nehra even texted me afterwards.”
The Kolkata Knight Riders had a disastrous start to the 2014 season, finishing last in the points table. Due to the Indian General Elections in 2014, the first round of the tournament was held in the United Arab Emirates. When the tournament returned to India, KKR reversed their fortunes and won the tournament. This was KKR’s and Gambhir’s second IPL championship in three years.

The former Indian star recalled, “In 2014 in Abu Dhabi, I started the IPL with three ducks in a row. In the fourth game, I got one. We had dropped four of our first five games. We were returning to the Ritz Carlton after losing the game. Shah Rukh Khan was standing in the lobby and asked what was wrong, so I told him I was contemplating suicide.”
Shah Rukh Khan told Gambhir, “You’re not dropping yourself until you’re there and you want to be there. He asked me to promise him that I would play every game until I was there,” the former KKR captain continued. We won in 2014 after I hit two or three half-centuries in a row. In seven years as captain, that was my only cricket conversation with him.”
The IPL 2024 season:
