Angelo Mathews, a Sri Lankan cricketer, has taken to social media to demand “justice” from the Apex Cricket Council over the Times Out incident. Mathews called Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan a cheat after presenting various proofs of his innocence. The situation does not appear to be ending anytime soon.
Mathews expressed his feelings in a post-match press conference following a contentious ‘timed out’ dismissal during the World Cup. Mathews called Shakib’s appeal disgraceful after the defeat that effectively eliminated Sri Lanka. The incident centred on Mathews’ failure to follow a World Cup rule that requires a new batter to be ready to face a delivery within two minutes of a wicket falling.

Mathews, on the other hand, supported his position with a time-stamped video, urging the cricket community to assess the situation. Matthews said after sharing the video, “Video evidence shows I still had five more seconds even after the helmet gave away! Can the fourth umpire make things right? I mean, safety comes first, and I couldn’t face the bowler without one. This is obvious deception; I demand justice.”
Meanwhile, after the game, the fourth umpire, Adrian Holdstock, had an entirely different take on the situation. Angelo Mathews, according to Holdstock, took more than two minutes to take his guard before the strap issue. He was given out by on-field umpires for failing to comply with the time rules. However, a broadcasting video showed Mathews only had five seconds before his strap snapped.
As the debate raged, many former Indian cricketers, including Gautam Gambhir and Mohammad Kaif, expressed their displeasure. “Shakib should believe in winning, but not at any cost,” Kaif said. Former Pakistani pacer Waqar Younis, on the other hand, slammed Shakib, saying, “That wasn’t good for the spirit of the game.”
For the unversed, Angelo Davis Mathews is a former Sri Lankan captain and professional cricketer. Despite having represented Sri Lanka in all three formats, Mathews currently plays Test and ODI cricket for the country.
