A week after India’s disappointing loss to Australia in the ODI World Cup 2023 finals, fans are looking forward to the upcoming 20-20 World Cup. On Thursday, the Indian Cricket Board will meet in Delhi with skipper Rohit Sharma and five selectors to discuss the future of Indian cricket.
However, when asked about India’s future star spinner, Ravichandran Ashwin revealed the significance of India’s World Cup loss to Australia. Ashwin revealed on his YouTube channel how the loss shocked Rohit and Virat Kohli and how they reacted in the locker room.
Ashwin told S. Badrinath on his YouTube channel, “Yes, we felt the pain. Rohit and Virat were in tears. It felt bad seeing that. In any case, it wasn’t meant to be. This was an experienced team. Everyone knew exactly what to do. Then it became professional. Everyone was familiar with their warm-ups and routines. I believe two natural leaders gave the team the space to do these two things while also creating a vibe.”
Ashwin on Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma:
Speaking further about the World Cup campaign and skipper Rohit Sharma’s leadership abilities, Ashwin stated that Rohit “walked the walk.” He confessed, “If you look at Indian cricket, everyone will tell you MS Dhoni is one of the best captains. Rohit Sharma is an exceptional individual. He understands each and every member of the team; he knows what each of us likes and dislikes. Also, he understands everything. He makes an effort to get to know each member personally.”
Ashwin went on to say, “He works extremely hard. He foregoes sleep and attends meetings; he first makes an effort. He makes an effort to comprehend how to explain tactics to each individual. That is advanced leadership in Indian cricket. Furthermore, walking the walk. It’s one thing to tell everyone to play a certain style of cricket, but doing so and demonstrating it on the field is quite another.”
“I’ve known Rohit for quite some time. What he did at the top was the starting point. He instilled faith in us. ‘It’s fine if we get out for 150,’ he said. At the very least, we’ll set the tone and instil fear. I believe all 11 players in the team had a fantastic World Cup.” Ashwin concludes. It’s worth noting that India will announce three teams for its tour to South Africa on Thursday. During the month-long tour, the team will play three T20Is, three ODIs, and two Tests. Rohit Sharma is expected to captain the team in all three formats.
