The Mumbai Indians (MI) announced on Monday, March 18, that Luke Wood will take Jason Behrendorff’s place in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. Now, everyone is talking about the new MI player Luke Wood.
Behrendorff was practising with the Mumbai Indians for the 2024 Indian Premier League when he broke his left fibula. He was sidelined for eight weeks due to the severe injury. To replace Behrendorff, the Hardik Pandya-led team elected to add Wood, another left-arm seamer.
In a T20I held in Karachi in September 2022, Wood, 28, made his debut on the international scene against Pakistan. He has so far participated in two ODIs and five T20Is. Wood has taken eight wickets at a strike rate of 13.50 and an average of 21.75 in his five games in the game’s shortest format. In September 2023, he made his final appearance for his country, against Ireland.

The Sheffield native has played for a number of well-known teams in international T20 leagues. Among the teams he has played for are the Melbourne Stars, Sylhet Strikers, Quetta Gladiators, Khulna Tigers, and Peshawar Zalmi. He recently helped the Babar Azam-led Peshawar Zalmi team reach Eliminator 2, where they were defeated by eventual winners Islamabad United, by taking 12 wickets at an average of 29.08 in 11 matches for the team in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2024.
Over his career, Wood has participated in 140 T20 matches. At a strike rate of 18.30 and an average of 25.87, he has amassed 147 wickets. In the T20 format, Wood has also recorded one five-for, and his economy rate is 8.45.
With two first-class centuries under his resume and an average of 25.45, Wood is also a respectable batter. He may not have lit the place on fire in T20 cricket, but he has still made some valuable contributions lower on the order. Wood has scored 321 runs at a strike rate of 111.07 and an average of 10.03 in 57 T20 innings. His best T20 total is 33 not out.
The speedster is in good form and will be eager to contribute to the five-time IPL champions in the lucrative 17th season of the league.
