According to reports, the two first met while filming a shampoo commercial in 2013. “I was nervous the first time I met her, which is why I cracked a joke because I didn’t know what to do. I thought I was being amusing, and I said something that was probably not the best thing to say. My joke became such a strange moment for me. She was so confident, she was on sets all the time,” Kohli once told American sports reporter Graham Bensinger. Sharma was eventually asked out by the cricketer.

The couple kept their relationship private, but they were frequently seen together in public. On set and during tours, they were seen visiting each other. Sharma also made it to the stands during several of the 31-year-old’s cricket matches in 2014. But it was India’s game against Sri Lanka in Hyderabad that year that confirmed their relationship status when Kohli blew a kiss to his lady love with his bat after scoring a half-century.

The couple decided to marry two years into their relationship, though Kohli revealed that there was no formal proposal from him because the couple knew they would marry eventually. “Marriage was a logical next step. I married at 29, which is considered young for an actress. I did it, however, because I was in love. I’m in love,” the actor has stated.
