Norway Chess Announces Total Chess World Championship Tour
The organizers of Norway Chess have made a groundbreaking announcement in the world of chess. They have revealed plans for the Total Chess World Championship Tour, a new competition endorsed by the International Chess Federation (FIDE). This tour will crown a brand new FIDE World Combined Champion across three different time controls: “fast classical,” rapid, and blitz.
Exciting New Format
The Total Chess World Championship Tour will introduce a fresh and exciting format to the chess world. The inaugural season is set to kick off in 2027, following a pilot event in the fall of 2026. The tour will consist of four tournaments per year, offering a total prize fund of $2.7 million and will take place in various venues around the globe.
“We are searching for ‘The Total Chess Player’—a versatile, tactically intelligent, and technically skilled athlete who excels in multiple time controls,” explained Kjell Madland, CEO of Norway Chess and the new championship.
New Opportunities for Players
The Total Chess World Championship Tour will provide players with a unique opportunity to compete for a prestigious world championship title. The first three events will boast a prize fund of $750,000 each, while the final four-player tournament, where the FIDE World Combined Champion will be crowned, will offer $450,000. A total of 24 players will participate in the tour, with some qualifying based on rating and others through eligible tournaments such as the World Rapid & Blitz Championship.
Broadening Chess’s Reach
The organizers are aiming to bring chess to a wider audience than ever before with high-quality production, interactive broadcasts, and fast-paced games. FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich expressed his support for the initiative, stating, “We are always looking for ways to innovate and push the boundaries of what chess can be. This new championship will complement the traditional World Chess Championship and offer fans even more excitement.”
Positive Reception from Players
World-renowned chess player Magnus Carlsen, who has won Norway Chess seven times and holds numerous world titles, has shown interest in the new competition. The 34-year-old, who withdrew from the world championship cycle in 2023 due to the demanding classical format, sees the Total Chess World Championship Tour as a welcome addition to the chess circuit.
Madland and Benedicte Westre Skog, Co-Owner and COO of Norway Chess, revealed that they have already discussed the concept with Carlsen and a few other players, all of whom are supportive of the idea.
Future Prospects
The organizers of Norway Chess are excited about the prospect of hosting a prestigious world championship event for years to come. They are currently working on securing investors, sponsorships, and host cities for the tour. Despite the ambitious plans, the 2026 Norway Chess tournament will proceed as scheduled, with more updates to follow in the coming weeks.
“We always wanted to think big and expand Norway Chess. Creating a brand new World Championship in the chess calendar is a significant achievement, and we are thrilled to have laid the foundation for this exciting venture,” said Westre Skog.
