India will take a giant step forward in its quest to become an Olympic nation when Mumbai serves as the host city for the 141st meeting of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) from October 15 to 17, 2023. India is hosting the IOC session for the first time in 40 years. The 86th IOC session was held in New Delhi in 1983. Mumbai and India may be proud of this accomplishment because the IOC session serves as the Olympic movement’s top decision-making body. The approval or modification of the Olympic Charter, the election of IOC members and office holders, and the choice of the Olympic host city are among the major issues it debates and makes decisions on. HOW DID INDIA WIN THE HOSTING RIGHTS AFTER NEARLY FOUR DECADES?
At the 139th IOC session in Beijing in February 2022, an Indian delegation led by Nita Ambani—the first Indian woman to be elected as an IOC member—made a strong argument. Mumbai’s proposal was overwhelmingly supported, with 99% of the votes cast by the delegates taking part in the voting. Abhinav Bindra, the first Indian to win an individual medal at the Olympics, was also a member of the Indian delegation.

In a recent interview with CNBC TV-18, IOC President Thomas Bach offered India’s hopes to host an Olympic Games his resounding backing, when asked if the topic will come up for consideration during the IOC session in Mumbai.
“India should decide that. Our hearts and doors are wide open here,” Bach stated. “India can contribute far more to the Olympic movement. It can help it expand to the extent that it can with India. Of course, it’s appreciated.
