Newcastle vs Manchester City: Preview
Newcastle form analysis
The Magpies suffered a creditable 1-2 home loss to Liverpool, taking the lead before a late Nunez double. However, defensive issues surfaced in a 1-3 defeat away at Brighton, with only Wilson’s late strike in response to Ferguson’s hat-trick. They did bounce back to beat Brentford 1-0 at home thanks to a Wilson penalty.
A gritty 0-0 draw away at AC Milan in the Champions League followed as they earned a good point. Most recently, Newcastle produced their best display yet in an emphatic 0-8 thrashing of Sheffield United, scoring eight on the road for the first time in their history.
Overall, Newcastle have competed well defensively but lacked attacking spark at times. The heavy loss at Brighton exposed problems at the back that Eddie Howe has worked to address. Going forward, chance creation has been an issue, overly reliant on Wilson and Isak. But the Milan draw and Sheffield United thrashing demonstrated Newcastle’s potential when everything clicks. More regular goalscoring is needed from their forwards.
Manchester City form analysis
Man City secured a hard fought 2-1 win away at Sheffield United, with Haaland and Rodri on target. They followed that up by hammering Fulham 5-1 at home, as Haaland bagged a hat-trick. However, defensive issues surfaced in a 3-1 away win at West Ham, requiring a Haaland strike to seal the points after going behind.
City responded by beating Red Star 3-1 at home in the Champions League, coming from behind through two Alvarez goals and a Rodri strike. Most recently, City comfortably defeated Nottingham Forest 2-0 thanks to goals from Foden and Haaland.
Overall, City have showcased their attacking brilliance, with Haaland settling in seamlessly. But they have been prone to defensive lapses at times, conceding avoidable goals. Pep Guardiola seems to have built another devastating frontline though, with Alvarez also impressing.
