Newcastle United vs Wolves: Preview
Newcastle United form analysis
The Magpies United have shown fighting spirit amid mixed results recently in league play. On January 31st, they won impressively 1-3 away at Aston Villa powered by a F. Schär brace. They drew next in a 4-4 thriller with Luton Town on February 3rd, twice blowing leads. Against Nottingham Forest on the 10th, Newcastle relied on individual brilliance from Bruno Guimarães to win 2-3 after trading first half punches. Resolve was again key in their next match on the 17th, fighting back twice against Bournemouth for a 2-2 draw including a stoppage time leveler.
However, Newcastle finally met their match on February 25th against league leaders Arsenal, well beaten 1-4 on the road. Overall, Newcastle have competed gamely with attacking threat, but focus and defensive organization abandoned them for key stretches in matches. Maintaining maximum concentration at both ends to translate chances while limiting opponents will be vital. The talent and spirit exist for a top table push, but greater consistency is required to stay in those places week to week at season’s end.
Wolves form analysis
It has been an eventful stretch recently for Wolves in Premier League action. They opened the run in thrilling fashion, drawing 3-3 twice against Manchester United on February 2nd before conceding an added time winner to lose 3-4. Wolves bounced back impressively four days later to stun Chelsea 2-4 on the road powered by a stellar Matheus Cunha hat trick. However the struggles resumed in a dull home loss 0-2 to Brentford on February 10th. Better results soon came as Wolves beat Tottenham Hotspur 1-2 away from home on the 17th with both goals superbly taken by midfielder João Gomes.
Hopes of building momentum stalled with a narrowly uninspiring 1-0 home win over Sheffield United on February 25th requiring a first half Pablo Sarabia strike. Overall, Wolves have competed strongly in an up and down stretch, highlighting both their danger on potent counter attacks and lack of control in matches with multiple results not reflecting the balance of play. Remaining organized and focused for 90 minutes will be key to translate their evident talent into further impressive results.
