New Zealand Set for Third Pakistan Tour in 17 Months for Five-Match T20I Series
New Zealand cricket fans will be treated to another series against Pakistan as the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed a five-match T20I tour scheduled from April 18th to 27th, 2024. This upcoming series marks New Zealand’s third visit to Pakistan within the past 17 months, highlighting the strong cricketing connection between the two nations.
The itinerary sees Rawalpindi hosting the first three matches on April 18th, 20th, and 21st. The series then moves to Lahore for the concluding two matches scheduled for April 25th and 27th. The New Zealand team is expected to arrive in Pakistan on April 14th, allowing for ample practice time before the opening match.
Scheduling Conflict with IPL May Limit Player Availability
A potential hurdle for the series is its overlap with the Indian Premier League (IPL). This situation is similar to the one encountered last year when New Zealand toured Pakistan for a combined T20I and ODI series in April and May. Due to this scheduling conflict, many key New Zealand players involved with IPL franchises might be unavailable for the Pakistan series.
Several prominent names like Kane Williamson (Gujarat Titans), Daryl Mitchell, Rachin Ravindra, Mitchell Santner, and Devon Conway (Chennai Super Kings) are likely to miss the Pakistan tour due to their IPL commitments.
Other New Zealand players including Glenn Phillips (Sunrisers Hyderabad), Trent Boult (Rajasthan Royals), and Lockie Ferguson (Royal Challengers Bangalore) will also be busy with the IPL during this period.
New Zealand v Pakistan Series Seen as Preparation for T20 World Cup
Despite the potential player limitations, the PCB remains optimistic about the series. “This tour symbolizes the strong ties and respect between our two cricketing nations,” said Usman Wahla, PCB’s Director of International Cricket.
He further emphasized the importance of the series for both teams, stating, “We expect another competitive series that serves as a crucial part of our preparation for the ICC T20 World Cup this year.” Cricket fans in Pakistan are also eagerly anticipating the series, welcoming the return of the New Zealand team.
