New Zealand Beat Bangladesh by 44 Runs in First ODI Played at Hagely Oval
New Zealand clinched a convincing 44-run victory over Bangladesh in a rain-shortened first ODI at Hagley Oval. It was a masterclass in calculated cricket, with the Black Caps displaying a deep understanding of DLS par scores and the specific demands of the pitch. They knew exactly what was defendable and when to accelerate, leaving nothing to chance.
The day was especially memorable for two New Zealand debutants who claimed crucial wickets. 22-year-old William O’Rourke picked up the final wicket of Hasan Mahmud, while Josh Clarkson impressed with figures of 2/24, including the key scalps of Litton Das and Anamul Haque.

Despite Bangladesh’s valiant effort, maintaining a run-rate above 6, the revised target of 245 in 30 overs proved insurmountable. The rain-delayed pitch favored batting, adding another layer of challenge to the chase.
New Zealand, though losing Rachin Ravindra and Henry Nicholls early, faced no real pressure in building their innings. Will Young, in his third ODI ton, anchored the chase with a fine 105 off 84 balls, sharing a match-winning 175-run partnership with skipper Tom Latham (92 off 78 balls).
Young’s dismissal, unfortunately run-out shortly after Latham departed, was the only hiccup in an otherwise dominant batting display. Although New Zealand lost a few late wickets, they had already posted a comfortable total.
However, a minor blemish for New Zealand was their running between the wickets. Four run-outs in a 30-over match, especially for a team known for their meticulous ground game, is an area requiring improvement.
Despite this, the win, particularly the contributions of the debutant bowlers, provides a major confidence boost for New Zealand as they build a younger team for the future. The talent in the young bowling department is evident, and their early exposure will be invaluable in their development.
Both teams now head to Nelson for the second ODI on December 20, where Bangladesh will seek to bounce back and New Zealand will aim to solidify their series lead.
