New Zealand World Cup 2023 Announced With A Few Suprises
New Zealand has announced its provisional squad for the ODI World Cup. All-rounder Rachin Ravindra has earned a spot as an additional spin option after putting up some impressive performances throughout the year. On the other hand, in a suprise exclusion, Fin Allen and Adam Milne will be missing the Men’s ODI World Cup 2023.
Kane Williamson’s inclusion was announced last week, but it is uncertain whether he will be ready for the opening match against England on October 5 as he continues through the final stages of recovery from his ACL injury. If Williamson is not available for certain games, Tom Latham would continue as captain.
Kane Williamson and Tim Southee have been selected to play in their fourth ODI World Cup, having featured in 2011, 2015, and 2019. Finn Allen did not make the cut for the World Cup squad, as he was excluded from the first ODI against England. He hasn’t been able to solidify his position in the team due to inconsistency. Devon Conway and Will Young are set to be New Zealand’s openers at the World Cup.

New Zealand Coach Gary Stead Makes a Reflection on the World Cup Squad
New Zealand coach Gary Stead said that the decision to select Will Young as an opener for the World Cup squad was made after considering the potential game plan in India, the grounds, and the form of the two players, Finn Allen and Will Young.
Stead expressed satisfaction with Young’s recent performances and believes that he is the right choice for the opening position. Young has played well in the last couple of games, and although he has not scored a big one, his performances have been encouraging.
New Zealand has gone for experienced specialist quicks Tim Southee, Trent Boult, Lockie Ferguson, and Matt Henry for its World Cup 2023 squad.
Mitch Santner and Ish Sodhi are the frontline spinners, with Rachin Ravindra supplementing them as an additional spin option. Ravindra made his ODI debut earlier this year. Jimmy Neesham, who was at the crease for the Super Over in the 2019 final, has also been retained.
New Zealand coach Gary Stead said that Michael Bracewell’s ACL injury earlier this year required a further assessment of the all-round options available, which led the selectors to choose Jimmy Neesham and Rachin Ravindra as all-rounders for the World Cup squad. Mark Chapman and Glenn Phillips could also play a role with the ball.
Adam Milne to Miss the ODI World Cup 2023
Adam Milne, who played at the 2015 World Cup and returned to the ODI side in 2022 after further battles with injury, has missed out on the World Cup squad. He was ruled out of the ongoing England series with a hamstring injury and has played just five matches in the format in last 3 years.
New Zealand’s Kyle Jamieson, who has had most of his international success at Test level, missed out on the World Cup squad as he recently returned to action after a back injury.
New Zealand coach Gary Stead said that selecting the squad for an ICC tournament involved tough calls, and some players would be disappointed. The key was to find the right balance for the squad and ensure that the bases were covered for what would be a highly competitive tournament.
