The Pakistan Cricket Team has risen to the top spot among ODI teams ahead of the third match against Afghanistan. It appears that the Green Brigade was required to win the three-match series 3-0 in order to advance. However, the visitors won the first and second ODIs and now enjoy a 2-0 unbeatable lead. Prior to the third match on August 25, Pakistan had risen to the top spot.
They managed to win the first game by 140 or so runs despite getting bowled out for 200 or so runs. In the second game, they had one wicket left when they chased down 300 runs. The Babar Azam-led team has a chance to keep their top ODI ranking if they defeat the Afghans with less than an hour to the start of the third ODI. They might advance as the top ODI team going into the Asia Cup 2023.

After defeating New Zealand in the second One-Day International, the Asian squad rose to the top spot in April of this year. They also had the chance at that moment to hold onto the top spot for the ensuing few months. The Blackcaps, though, were able to prevent the rout. Babar Azam is the first skipper to have his team rank first in the ODI rankings.
As early as this next Saturday (August 26), Pakistan will have the chance to surpass all other ODI teams in the world rankings and qualify for the Asia Cup 2023 as the best team in the world. If Afghanistan is defeated in the third ODI on Saturday (August 26), the Babar Azam-led team would move into first place in the rankings.
On paper, the current Pakistani team appears to be formidable and could challenge other teams in the Asia Cup. Babar Azam, the captain of Pakistan, sits at the top of the coveted list and is one of three of the top five batsmen in the ICC’s ODI rankings. They also take pride in having elite bowlers, particularly fast bowlers, among their number. Pakistan has won the Asia Cup twice in its history, in 2000 and 2012.
