Veteran Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon, known for his stellar performances in Test cricket, is eyeing a return to the World Cup in style. Lyon recently revealed that he’s ready to feature in the 50-over World Cup and would love the opportunity to represent Australia in India. This revelation comes after a period of rehabilitation following a calf injury sustained during the second Ashes Test at Lord’s.
The 35-year-old cricketer has been out of action since his injury, but he’s set to make his return to competitive cricket, representing the North District Cricket Club next weekend. His message to coach Andrew McDonald came in response to the omission of Ashton Agar from the World Cup squad due to a calf injury as well, leaving Australia with only one specialist spinner in Adam Zampa.

“I sent Andrew McDonald a text message the other day when I saw Ashton Agar was ruled out,” Lyon stated. “I said, ‘Just to let you know, I’m back bowling 10 overs, I’m right to go, 100 per cent.’ If that happened, I’d do anything to go over and play the World Cup.”
Lyon’s interest for the World Cup is understandable, and he believes that the current Australian squad is brimming with talent and experience. Marnus Labuschagne replaced Agar in the squad, showcasing Australia’s depth in batting. This development further fueled Lyon’s desire to represent his country in the upcoming tournament.
Despite Lyon’s limited opportunities in the 50-over format, having played only 29 ODIs compared to Adam Zampa’s 85, he expressed confidence in his ability to deliver if called upon. However, he acknowledges that several factors would need to go wrong for him to get the opportunity, and he hopes for Australia’s sake that the current squad performs admirably in the World Cup.
Nathan Lyon is still recovering from his injury and potentially want represent Australia in the World Cup, an unlikely thing to happen but Australia won’t mind having him in their side after what they went through at MA Chidambaram Stadium.
Lyon’s experience, and unwavering passion for the game make him a valuable asset to Australian cricket, whether in the Test arena or on the world stage of the 50-over World Cup.
