Nantes vs Clermont: Preview
Nantes form analysis
FC Nantes have struggled for consistent positive results over their past five Ligue 1 matches. On 26th November they were held at home by Le Havre to a goalless draw in the league cup. Their struggles converting chances into wins continued on 3rd December despite edging past Nice 1-0 at home thanks to Mollet’s winner. Nantes were more threatening on 10th December at PSG but succumbed to a 1-2 loss. Mohamed cancelled out Barcola’s opener, undone by Kolo Muani late on.
Lean results continued on 17th December with a disappointing 0-2 home defeat to Brest, with no response to goals from Magnetti and Mounié. Most recently on 21st December, issues breaking defensive sides down persisted in an important 0-1 home loss to Lyon, undone by Lacazette’s clinical second half finish. Overall, Nantes have struggled at both ends, scoring just twice but conceding seven times over this run. Addressing these problems in January could spark an upturn in fortunes.
Clermont form analysis
Clermont have struggled for positive momentum over their past five Ligue 1 matches. On 29th November they battled to grab a late point in a 1-1 away draw at Montpellier, going ahead through Gonalons early before Savanier’s late penalty after Esteve’s dismissal. However, Clermont failed to build on that gritty display, well beaten 0-3 at home by Brest on 3rd December courtesy of a perfect Del Castillo brace sandwiching Pereira Lage’s strike. Their struggles continued on 10th December as they were held at home by Lille in a dour goalless draw.
Clermont produced an improved display on 17th December away at high flying Marseille and arguably deserved better than a 1-2 loss after Allevinah halved the arrears following Murillo and Harit goals. But they finished 2022 poorly on 21st December, suffering a disappointing 1-3 home defeat to Rennes, limited to Nicholson’s consolation after Doué and Blas’ late penalty added gloss for the visitors either side of Kalimuendo equalizing. Overall, Clermont ended the year lacking scoring threat and defensive stability, keeping just one clean sheet during this spell. Addressing these issues must be the priority heading into 2024.
